Graphic Design Major Corey Bettis’s poster was chosen for the “Know What You Owe” competition, sponsored by the MWSU Financial Aid Office. He was awarded a $500.00 scholarship.
The following graphic design students’s banners were chosen, printed, and hung at the Heartland Foundation’s EmPowerU Campus: Brooke Carter, Neal Grey, Tara Sabbert, Teresa Rodewald and Amy Anthius. Heartland Foundation honored these students with a reception.
Senior, Tori (Victoria) Christgen spoke at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research at Weber University located in Ogden, Utah about her recent work with green sand casting and the cost effectiveness of the process. Tori’s presentation was chosen from more than 3500 submissions and was well received. After graduation she has been accepted into a graduate sculpture program in Baltimore.
Art Education Freshman, Tony Redmond had an essay chosen to be published in “Discovering the Student, Discovering the Self,” an English 100 student publication to inform English professors who teach this type of pedagogy the kinds of essays they may expect in these classes. Mr. Redmond responded to the writing prompt to describe an object that had particular meaning for him. He was again honored at the reception with an honorable place award.
The Griffon News earned 22 awards and its editor-in-chief, David Hon, was named the top college journalist in the state April 14th at the 2012 Missouri College Media Association convention, which was hosted by Missouri Western.
Graphic design major Brooke Carter won 10 individual and shared awards. She swept the top three places in the editorial cartoon category and won the information graphic and advertising categories. She also shared top honors with other staff members in the section front page design category (with Hon), sports page category (with Thomas Huitt-Johnson and Jason Brown) and feature page category (with Christian Mengel, Jesse Bilderback, Blair Stalder and Brown).
Graphic design major, Raphaelle Drew brought home an honorable mention in “Portrait” for her work on the paper. Drew and graduate student in intergrated media, Heather Heater teamed up in two entries to take first and second in sports design.
The conference, which drew 150 participants from over 20 Missouri colleges and universities was held in Spratt and Potter Halls. The conference featured workshops, critiques and sessions by journalism teachers and journalists throughout the state, including several from the St. Joseph News-Press. Rob Curley, the new media editor of the Las Vegas Sun and a former vice-president of new media for The Washington Post/Newsweek, was the keynote speaker at the awards banquet, which was held in Fulkerson Center.
Dr. Bob Bergland, Professor of Journalism and Integrated Media and Adviser to The Griffon News States that “Missouri is a state known for its journalism and journalism schools, so being named as the best college journalist in the state is an incredible honor.”
Every year a $1000 scholarship is given to one deserving animation student, along with a one-year membership in Women In Animation. The annual beginning submission date is September 15th. The yearly deadline is April 29th (Phyllis Craig’s birthday) and winners will be notified by July 1st.
Submissions Must Include:
1. A portfolio or reel. Portfolio artwork should be copied and reduced to 8 _ by 11”. Do not send originals.
Portfolios and/or reels will not be returned.
2. A 500 word essay outlining educational and career goals, and financial need. Essays should be typewritten or clearly printed.
3. One written recommendation from a teacher or mentor.
4. A copy of your Student Identification.
Award: One winner will receive a $1,000 award and a one year membership in Women in Animation.
Judging: Judging is solely the responsibility of WIA and the decision is final. Judging will be done by the WIA
Scholarship Committee. Winners will be notified by July 1st.
Submissions: Applications open every year on September 15th . The submission deadline is April 29th. All materials must be submitted together. Clearly label all parts of your submission with name, address and telephone number of applicant. Please include your email address, if you have one.

Mark Wascher, a student in the BFA Studio Art Photography program, will be exhibiting his photograph “On Auto” as part of the Undergraduate College Student Exhibition at the Kansas City Artists Coalition, April 13-27, 2012.
Rochell Slahorek, a student in the MWSU BFA Studio Art Photography program has been honored with exhibition of her artwork in two juried shows this spring. Her piece The House on the Hill was selected by juror Lisa Bartlett for inclusion in the Women in the Arts exhibit at the Craft Studio Gallery in Columbia, Missouri, and her piece The Caboose was selected by juror Christopher James to be exhibited in the Alternative Processes show at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The first of two exhibits for graduating seniors from the art department at Missouri Western State University features graphic design and studio art work by Amelia Anthuis, Corey Bettis, Jamie Bonkoski, Tori Christgen, Ali Dalsing, Daniel Janovec, Jared Jorgensen, Kendra Stirn, Dana Rudolph, Carrie Watson, Blake Weddle, and Brandie Wertz.
The exhibit will run from April 11-19, 2012 in the Potter Gallery, located inside Potter Hall on the Missouri Western State University campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public, with gallery hours from 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.
An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, April 11th, from 4-7pm.

1998 Department of Art graduate Kwanza Humphrey will have work in a group exhibition entitled Mélange beginning April 6th at the Late Show Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri. Kwanza is a Multimedia developer at Sprint Corp. where he develops various web-enabled materials for online training courses for various business units throughout the company.
