This is the third annual pasta dinner sponsored by the Griffon Art Alliance and the MWSU Clay Guild. More than 200 handmade ceramic bowls have been produced by MWSU art students and instructors for this event. For only $10, those attending the all-you-can-eat pasta dinner can choose a handmade bowl to take home.

The second of two exhibits for graduating seniors from the art department at Missouri Western State University features animation, graphic design and studio artwork by Amanda Bettis, Kat Furlong, Ellie Green, Dustin Johnson, Eboni Lacey, Trevor Lund, Gregory Norris, Deb Potter, Teresa Rodewald, Andrew Setter, Laura Sharp, Emily Stojevich-Swenson, Fran Texeira, Jane Travis, and Mark Wascher Jr. The exhibit’s curator is Kansas City art writer Blair Schulman.
The exhibit will run from April 17-25, 2013 in the Potter Gallery, located inside Potter Hall on the Missouri Western State University campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public, with gallery hours from 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.
An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th, from 4-7pm.

Dr. Mohamed Ghazala, will be an upcoming visiting artist from April 14th – 18th at Missouri Western State University. Mohamed Ghazala is an artist of animated films, the founder and the director of the first chapter of the International Animated Film Association “ASIFA” in Africa and in the Arab world based in Egypt, and the member of the board of ASIFA. Dr. Ghazala is an Assistant Professor in the Animation Department at Minia University in Egypt. He has served on a number of international animation festival juries including Stuttgart (Germany), Castelli Animati (Italy), Animanima (Serbia), AnimaAfrik (Ghana), ReAnimania (Armenia), Animae Caribe (Trinidad & Tobago), AnimaBasauri (Spain), CICDAF (China) and Chilemonos (Chile).

Professor Geo Sipp will exhibit large-scale drawings in a show entitled Before Algeria at Weinberger Fine Art, located at 1800 Baltimore in the Kansas City Crossroads Fine Arts District. The opening is Friday, April 5th, from 5:30 – 8:30. The exhibition runs through the end of the month.

Shelby Hughes, senior graphic design student from Rosendale, Mo., and Emily Stojevich-Swenson, senior graphic design student from St. Joseph, recently had their work accepted into the Ninth Annual National Student Show and Conference in Dallas from April 11-13. This was a highly selective competition with over 1,200 entries from colleges and universities from across the nation. The conference, sponsored by the Dallas Society of Visual Communications, is the only national creative competition and design conference just for students.
Hughes’ work, a series of five Trails West! posters, was one of only nine posters accepted for the national show. Stojevich-Swenson’s packaging project for Kettles and Cups Tea Company was one of only eleven selected from the packaging category.
The conference features nationally known keynote speakers, breakout design sessions, workshops, panel discussions and studio tours. The students will have the chance to have their portfolios reviewed by some of the industry’s leading design and advertising professionals.
The first Senior Art Exhibit will run from April 3-12, 2013 in the Potter Gallery, located inside Potter Hall on the Missouri Western State University campus. An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3rd, from 4-7pm.

Phil Shafer is a graphic artist living and working in Kansas City. Originally from Brooklyn NY, Shafer moved to KC as a youth and attended the Kansas City Art Institute to study photography and video. After graduating in 2000, Shafer has worked as a graphic designer for a research lab at the KU Med Center as well as designing for his own free lance creative company, Sike Style Industries. Shafer is involved in the KC hip-hop and art scene, curating shows for Urban Culture Project and the Kultured Chameleon Gallery and Dj-ing on the weekends.
Shafer is an artist, thinker and a hustler of culture.
He will be giving a lecture Monday, April 1st on the Missouri Western State University campus in Popplewell 205. Shafer will share his insights on making public art and self promotion you don’t have to be ashamed of.
Geo Sipp has recently joined Weinberger Fine Art in Kansas City. Professor Sipp also exhibits at The Adam Baumgold Gallery in New York.

Life influences his paintings. He wants to bring something personal to the viewer. Humphrey has over ten years of experience in the design and art field. Starting in print and then to web development, his first love is illustration.
“Painting is an emotional experience for me, so much so that it’s hard to put into words the way I work. Sometimes I have a conversation with myself and shape a feeling. Other times I just let go and let my subconscious take over where color and brush are the medium I use to communicate.”
He is currently employed as a multi-media flash developer where he works with a team to design web enabled instructions.
