Visual Arts Day

The Missouri Western State University Department of Art is extending a warm invitation to you and your art students to attend the first annual MWSU Visual Arts Day. We will be hosting Visual Arts Day, Thursday, October 11, 2012. Scheduled events will begin at 8:00 am and conclude about 4:00 pm. The day will consist of a juried high school art exhibition, art competitions and events, and studio workshops in clay, graphics, animation, printmaking, photography, drawing, and sculpture. Participating students and faculty will have the opportunity to view the artwork of their contemporaries in an environment designed to promote creativity, collaboration, and camaraderie.

Sean Starwars — Visiting Artist September 10th – 13th / Exhibition in Potter Gallery September 10th – October 9th

Sean Starwars, a member of the renowned Outlaw Printmakers will be in the Missouri Western Print Studios Monday, September 10th through Thursday, September 13th, 2012. An exhibition of his recent woodcuts is currently on view in the Potter Gallery from September 10th through October 9th. More of Sean’s work may be viewed at http://www.seanstarwars.com.

New York Trip — November 8th – 11th, 2012

The fall, 2012 New York Art & Culture trip is November 8th -11th, 2012. Experience the Met, the MoMA, the Whitney and many of the city’s galleries in Chelsea, DUMBO and Brooklyn. Winner of Trails West Poster competition

Brandie Wertz, MWSU graphic design student, was the winner of the 2012 Trails West! Poster competition.  Brandie’s poster chosen from over 50 entries and will be used to promote this year’s Trails West! Festival in St. Joseph. Beside having her work printed for posters and buttons, Brandi received a $500.00 for her winning design.

Graphic Design Awards and Honors

Graphic Design Awards and Honors for 2011-2012:

The MWSU Graphic Design students have experienced a wonderful year full of competitions, awards and honors. The following are a list of students and their achievements throughout this academic year.

Chad Hammontree – SoundSCAPE Poster – Poster selected from over 50 entries to be printed and distributed internationally for the 2012 SoundSCAPE New Music Festival held in the Italian Alps.

Brooke Carter – Cover Design selected for The Mochila Review, a national journal that is published annually by Missouri Western State University’s English, Foreign Languages, and Journalism Department.  She also had several designs that printed throughout the journal.

Brandi Wertz –  2012 Trails West! Poster chosen from over 50 entries for promotion of this year’s Trails West! Festival in St. Joseph.

Brett Huskamp, Amy Anthius, Greg Norris, Tara Sabbart, Chad Hammontree and Brandi Wertz – Posters selected to be presented at the Trail West! Patrons’ Party.

Amy Anthius, Brooke Carter, Neil Grey, Tara Sabbart and Teresa Rodewald – Banner designs were chosen, printed, and hung as exterior promotional banners throughout the EmpowerU Education Campus.

Brooke Carter –Cover Design for Canvas, a student Journal of Contemporary Literature and Art printed at MWSU and funded by the Missouri Western Foundation.

Corey Bettis – Poster was chosen for the “Know What You Owe” competition, sponsored by the MWSU Financial Aid Office. He was awarded a $500.00 scholarship.

Chad Hammontree – Logo selected for Better Block Organization of St. Joseph.

Brooke Carter – 10 individual and shared awards at the Missouri College Media Association Convention.  She was awarded the top three places in the editorial cartoon category and won the information graphic and advertising categories. (The Journalism Dept. also reported these awards.)

Jeremy Todd – Logo design selected for the 2012 National College Honors Council Conference His work was in competition with other students from colleges and universities across the country. (The English Dept. also reported this award.)

Brooke Carter – Design Work chosen for Dr. and Mrs. Vartabedian’s  2012 Christmas Card.

Corey Bettis – Juror’s Award for his handmade “14 Designer’s Book” at the 2012 Senior Art Exhibition. The show juror was Juror Nicole Mauser of Push Projects in Kansas City.  Ms Mauser has a MFA from University of Chicago and a BFA from the Ringling College of Art and Design.

Brooke Carter – Juror’s Award for her Tsunami Relief Poster at the 2012 Senior Art Exhibition. The show juror was Juror Nicole Mauser of Push Projects in Kansas City.  Ms Mauser has a MFA from University of Chicago and a BFA from the Ringling College of Art and Design.

Neil Grey – Provost’s Award for this Tsunami Relief Poster at the 2012 MWSU student art exhibition.

Shelby Price – First Place for her handmade typography book at the 2012 MWSU art exhibition.

Kendra Stirn – 2nd Place for her handmade typography book at the 2012 MWSU art exhibition.

Chad Hammontree – 3rd Place for his SoundSCAPE poster at the 2012 MWSU art exhibition.

Art Ed Major Wins Scholarship

Matthew Robertson recently won the prestigious RETIRED TEACHERS SCHOLARSHIP aimed at students who graduated from a St. Joseph, MO high school and are studying to be teachers. Robertson said of the $1000 grant that he is thankful for the support and proud to represent the teachers who instilled the love of education in his life. He plans to teach art in K-12 after graduation.

Kwanza Humphry

Art Department graduate Kwanza Humphry has  a painting on the cover of  Art@Work.  This  program of the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City, is a city-wide corporate arts challenge that enables companies to showcase their employees’ talents in the visual and literary arts as well as in music, dance, and film!  Since its inception in 2007, over 1,300 employees and CEOs have proven that some of Kansas City’s most creative minds can be found in the office

Senior Art Exhibition, April 25- May 3

The second of two exhibits for graduating seniors from the art department at Missouri Western State University features graphic design and studio art work by Brooke Carter, Neal Grey, Chad Hammontree, Sara Hunt, Brett Huskamp, Samantha Jones, Ashley Linder, Andrew Needham, Tara Sabbert, Deanna Sedlock, and Rochell Slahorek.

The exhibit will run from April 25- May 3, 2012 in the Potter Gallery, located inside Potter Hall on the Missouri Western State University campus.  The exhibit is free and open to the public, with gallery hours from 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.

An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25th, from 4-7pm.

 

2nd Annual Pasta Bowl Dinner

COME FOR DINNER AND KEEP THE BOWL!

The Griffon Arts Alliance is hosting their 2nd Annual Pasta Bowl Dinner.

Students and Ceramics instructor, Dave Harris have made a large number of bowls in which  we will be serving a pasta dinner and you get to keep the bowl.

Where: Dinner is at the American Legion Post 359 4826 Frederick Ave.
When: 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20th.
Cost: $10.00 for adults with ceramic bowl included
$5.00 for children 12 and under-no ceramic bowl
$5.00 anyone not wanting ceramic bowl

Graphic Design Majors Drew and Greenwell Receive Awards in New York

 The Griffon yearbook received a Silver Crown at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, New York City, March 18. The Griffon was one of 14 yearbooks to receive a Crown award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, recognizing it as one of the top 3% percent of yearbooks in the country. Art Department majors who won awards were the Editor-in-Chief, Raphael’le Drew, Editor-In-Chief and Photo Editor, Hanna Greenwell, both graphic design majors. The advisor of The Griffon is Ann Thorne.
