Tips for Making a Four-Year Plan

The Advisement Graduation Planner is a tool for students to assist them with preparing their plans of study.  The form will help students stay on track, take their courses in the proper sequence, and project their graduation dates.

Go to the Missouri Western homepage
  • Go to A-Z Search at the top.
  • Go to M and find Major Minor Forms.
  • Print the major form for your major.  If you are undecided, print one that is a good fit for you or one that you are interested in pursuing.
  • Go back to the Advising Center website:  www.missouriwestern.edu/advising and click on the Advisement Graduation Planner link on the left-hand side.  You might want to print this and pencil in the courses as you go.
  • Using your university catalog:
    • Look up each course on your major form (beginning at the bottom of the form), paying close attention to what semester the course is taught and what prerequisites the course requires.
    • List out the courses on your Advisement Graduation Planner as you plan to take them:
      • Make sure all prerequisites have been met for the courses prior to the semester you plan to take them.
      • If there are prerequisites, list those out in previous semesters, making sure to check if those courses have prerequisites too.
      • Make sure that the courses you plan to take each semester are offered in the semester you have listed on your four-year plan.
    • Don't forget to check on which general studies your major requires/prefers and add those into your four-year plan as well.
    • If your major requires LAS (Liberal Arts & Sciences) Focus classes, you can look at page 152 of the university catalog for that course designation.
    • If you do not have a university catalog, you can find it online at:  www.missouriwestern.edu/catalog.
    • Students in the Honors Program should be aware of their specific rules and offerings.
    • Discuss your four-year plan with your advisor.

Make sure you have a total of 124 credit hours (only-100 level classes and above are counted for graduation.)

Using the Advisement Graduation Planner, fill in the date, your name, G#,  major, minor (if applicable), then the semester  and terms of each semester, the courses in the order you plan to take them each semester, and total the number of hours you plan to take each semester.  (Hint: it is easier to start at the bottom of the form on the last semester, listing the highest level of courses you will be taking and work your way backwards, senior-level classes back through freshmen-level classes.)  Course availability is subject to change.
