Staff Association

Mary Dean, admissions, (left) and Barbara Davis, Liberal Arts and Sciences, (right) along with other members of the Staff Association, hosted a silent auction at their staff retreat to raise money for America's Second Harvest. Staff throughout campus made gift baskets and craft items to auction off for the fundraiser. Barbara is pictured with the door prizes for the staff retreat.

Staff Association Generous at Christmas Time

For the second year, Western’s staff association added an element of giving to their annual winter retreat. Along with a lunch and a murder mystery game, the association hosted a silent auction to raise money for the Backpack Buddies program at America’s Second Harvest of St. Joseph.

More than 30 items were donated for the auction, as staff across campus created gift baskets, baked goods and craft items. The staff association raised a little over $800, and donations are still coming in.

“This is the season of giving, and what better way to do that than to support the Backpack Buddies program?” said Hawley Rumpf, who coordinated the silent auction.

Through a partnership with the St. Joseph School District, the Backpack Buddies program provides weekend food packages to elementary students at risk of going hungry when school is not in session.

The staff association also provided several items for three families in St. Joseph’s Adopt-A-Family program. The group has been adopting families at Christmastime for 15 years.

Report of Armed Robbery at Western is a False Report

The report of an armed robbery at Western was a false report. There was not an armed robbery on Western’s campus last Thursday night, according to Jon Kelley, director of public safety.

“I am pleased that our public safety department was able to resolve this case so quickly. Western is a safe campus, and I am happy to report we still have a record of no armed robberies on campus,” reported Ron Olinger, vice president for financial planning and administration.

According to Kelley, witnesses who were with the victim at the time of the robbery report that a robbery did occur somewhere in St. Joseph, but not on Western’s campus. The case has been turned over to the St. Joseph Police Department for investigation.

“It is disappointing that the student was not truthful about this incident. The report unnecessarily worried others on campus. It also has hampered the investigation by not reporting the correct circumstances surrounding the robbery,” added Kelley.

The incident reported last Thursday evening was taken seriously by the entire campus, said Olinger. At the onset of the investigation the public safety department took precautions necessary to warn students and employees, actively pursued the investigation, and increased the presence of officers on campus.

Leadership Lexicon Call for Programs

The Center for Student Engagement would like to invite Western faculty and staff to present at the second annual Leadership Lexicon, a leadership conference for students Feb. 3. Because students have different levels of leadership skills, we have developed the track system. We are looking for presentations that cover different levels and types of leadership, and there are five different tracks:  beginners, intermediate, advanced, Greek, and advisor.

Each session will be 45 minutes long, and the conference is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (You will not have to be present for the entire conference, but we welcome you if you would like to stay.) If you have any questions, please feel free to call the center for student engagement at 4159 or email engagement. Thank you in advance for contributing to the future leadership of our campus.

Students Assist Local Nonprofit Organizations

Seven area nonprofit organizations were assisted this semester when students in Dr. Diane Gorcyca’s Public Relations course participated in applied learning. The students selected a nonprofit organization, and in cooperation with that organization, developed a public relations campaign proposal.

Dr. Gorcyca, professor of speech, said students assessed the current situation, developed long- and short- term objectives; conducted research on the organization’s target audiences, and developed implementation strategies to accomplish the short-term objectives.

The organizations were Special Olympics, CASA, Albrecht-Kemper Museum, Patee House Museum, St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce and United Cerebral Palsy, all of Saint Joseph; and C3 Missions of Kansas City, Mo.

For the final assignment, students delivered an oral presentation of the proposal to the organization, and Dr. Gorcyca said the organizations were very excited about the student proposals.

This spring, the students will take their proposals into the Public Relations Writing class taught by Dr. Ken Rosenauer, professor of journalism. There they will produce the tactics proposed, and the final package will be delivered to the organization at the end of the semester.
