Barbara Sprong Leadership Challenge

Consider participating in the Barbra Sprong Leadership Challenge this spring! It is a great opportunity for leadership training. Basic information about the program follows, or contact Hannah Coy in the Center for Student Engagement at 4159, or hjc3854 for more information.

Purpose
The purpose of the Barbara Sprong Leadership Challenge is to provide Western students with an opportunity to acquire and enhance leadership skills so that they may assume leadership roles while in college and after graduation. The program is named in honor of Barbara Sprong, a former member and president of the Western Board of Regents (now Board of Governors) who continues to be a leader in the St. Joseph community.

Eligibility
All full-time Western students who have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average are eligible to apply for the leadership challenge. Students who complete the program without absences will receive one hour of credit through the Division of Continuing Education (Motivation and Leadership; CED 121). The program is designed to accommodate 24 students.

Letter of Recommendation
A letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member must accompany the application form. The letter should address the nominee’s leadership potential and academic ability.

Obligations

Participants must agree to attend the weekend retreat and ALL sessions of the Sprong Leadership Challenge program. The overnight retreat dates are March 3 and 4. Participants are required to submit a brief (200 to 300 word - 1 page double-spaced) essay on an individual they know or admire, describing the leadership qualities demonstrated by that person and how these qualities contributed to his/her success. There will be a service project on March 23 and March 24, and participants will create a display board about that experience. Six sessions will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 6 through March 29. There are no sessions during spring break. The program concludes with a Sprong Leadership Challenge recognition event. Applications are available in the Center for Student Engagement, Blum Union 207.

Applications are due in the Center for Student Engagement office by 4:30 p.m. on December 12. Interviews will be conducted on December 13 and 14.

Western Institute Receives Grant

The Western Institute has received a $10,000 grant to prepare a plan for a business incubator that would assist entrepreneurs to develop new businesses. The plan will be developed for the Kaysinger Basin Regional Planning Commission in Clinton, Mo. Western is the lead on the project and is collaborating with the University of Central Missouri’s Small Business and Technology Development Center.

Dr. Christopher Shove, dean and executive director of the Western Institute, said the Institute was selected due to its staff expertise in successfully planning and acquiring funding for technology incubators and related programs. Recently, the Institute received a $2.5 million federal grant to build a science and technology incubator on Western’s campus. He noted that Western students will prepare significant parts of the incubator plan.

The Commission represents seven rural counties – Bates, Benton, Cedar, Henry, Hickory, St. Clair and Vernon.

New Class Explores Video Games

If you like to play ’em, you might want to learn all about ’em; video games that is. And your chance to do just that will be in the spring semester, when Jeremy Warner, instructor of theatre, is teaching a new class – Video Games and New Media.

Basically, he says, it’s everything you ever wanted to know about video games and more; and students will have the opportunity to create a simple video game using a Flash program. The class will talk about linear and nonlinear storytelling, interactive media, action scripting, video games as an art form, and several issues relevant to video games.

“It (the class) will allow students to go out on their own and develop their own voice and style,” said Warner. “I’m looking forward to hearing their different ideas and opinions.”

He said there has been a lot of interest in the class so far, from students at all levels and in several different majors. The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m.
