The Western department of music, in cooperation with the First Presbyterian Church, will hold the monthly First Thursday Downtown Noontime Concert at 12:10 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the First Presbyterian Church, 7th and Jules. Jerry Anderson will present an organ recital, “Sounds of the Season,” music for Advent and Christmas. The audience is invited to bring lunch to eat while listening to the performance. There will be an opportunity to meet the musician after the concert. A minimum donation of $3 per person is suggested in order to meet the expenses and provide continuation of the series. Anderson retired as director of keyboard studies and associate professor of music at Western last May but continues to teach there part time. He taught piano and piano literature since 1972. Many of his students have won awards in piano performance, completed graduate degrees and are in successful performance careers. Since 1974 Anderson has been director of music (organist/choirmaster) at First Presbyterian Church, where he plays the 46-rank Visser-Rowland pipe organ installed in 1989. |

Western Present Senior Art Exhibits Western will present an exhibit of the work of two senior art majors Dec. 3-14 in Thompson E. Potter Hall Gallery, room 206. An opening reception will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 3. The gallery will then be open and free to the public Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The work of Jamison Burns, Desoto, Texas; and Katie Sherman, Platte City, Mo., will be on display. Burns came to Western on a football athletic scholarship and to study art. He will graduate in December with a bachelor of science degree in graphic design. After graduation he plans to pursue a career in sports advertising. He will display a collection of art pieces in graphic design, illustration and painting. Sherman will also graduate in December with a bachelor of science degree in art education. She is currently student teaching in the Platte County R-III School District. Upon graduation Sherman plans to seek a career in art education. She will display pieces in photography, painting, printmaking and graphic design. |

Eggs and Issues to Be Broadcasted Dr. Gary Clapp, president and CEO of the Institute for Industrial and Applied Life Sciences (IIALS), recently spoke at Western about the role the life science industry plays in St. Joseph’s present and its future at Western’s first Eggs and Issues of the academic year. That Eggs and Issues will be broadcast Dec. 4-16 on MWTV, which is channel 39 on St. Joseph Cablevision and channel 97 in Atchison, Kan. It will air on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon and on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. For more information contact video communications producer Tara Stoll at 4171. |

Night out with the Griffs The Western Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host their annual “Night Out on the Griffs” from 6-10 p.m. Dec. 7. The event will provide St. Joseph area children in grades K-4 a chance to participate in fun activities with Western student-athletes. It will also allow parents to have a night without the kids, free of charge. Bring your children to the MWSU Looney Complex for a night filled with activities, popcorn and fun. It’s a high energy atmosphere so the kids will return to you tired and ready for bed. Please dress your children in tennis shoes and game clothes. For questions or to RSVP, call Eric Kramer at 4258. Blood Drive The Western Student Nurses Association is sponsoring an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Blum Student Union lounge. Holiday Art Sale Western will host a holiday art sale Dec. 6-8 in the Potter Hall lobby. Times are as follows: · 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 6 · 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 7 · 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dec. 8 This year, 18 ceramic artists are participating. Items available include wheel-thrown and hand-built utilitarian items including bowls, mugs, teapots, vases and plates, as well as unique sculptural art pieces. Original student etchings as well as photographs and posters will be available also. Ten percent of the proceeds will go to the Amy Singleton Memorial Art Scholarship fund. Considering College Are you considering college but are a nontraditional student? Do you have a lot of questions? Do you worry about balancing home, school and work? Are you apprehensive about taking notes and tests again? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, consider attending, “How to Be a Successful Nontraditional Student at Missouri Western State University,” from 2-4 p.m. Dec. 12 in Eder Hall, room 208. There will be discussions about enrolling, getting financial aid, finding resources on campus, finding a major and more. Also, there will be a short tour of the campus.
