Groundbreaking Held for New Residence Hall

Western held a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 17 for our new residence hall to be built south of Vaselakos Residence Hall. The new hall is slated to open fall 2005. The Board of Regents approved the approximately $14 million construction project at their October meeting. Pictured from left are Dennis Strait of Gould Evans Goodman Associates, LC, architects; Susan Colgan, Regents president; Zane Brickey of Lawhon Construction; Dr. James Scanlon, president; Sylvester Brandon, Student Government Association president; and Luke Gorham, Residence Council president.

Third Graders Visit Western

Left: Jenny Jones, junior graphic design major and events coordinator for residence council, hikes along the Missouri Department of Conservation trail on Western's campus with third- grader Taylor Wolfe who said her favorite part of the hike was seeing the squirrels. Right: Sophomore and residence council member Lea Bryant, left, and sophomore Lacey Merrell helped the third graders with an art project.

The Western campus rang with children’s laughter on Nov. 12 as area third graders hiked through the nature trail, completed an art project and were treated to caramel apples, all courtesy of the Center for Multicultural Education (CME) and Residence Council.

“We’re really trying to get more connected with the community,” said Angie Smith, intern for the CME. “A good way to start is with the schools.”

Thirty third graders from the Buchanan County R-IV School District, Rushville Elementary arrived at the Missouri Department of Conservation on campus and were greeted by CME volunteers and residence council members.  Naturalist LuAnn Cadden then led the students on a nature hike and explained to them about forest fires and natural habitats.

When they returned to the conservation department, the students used animal prints as stamps to create decorative pictures. The third graders were also given the opportunity to explore the conservation department and its many educational displays.  At the end of the visit, the Western students presented the third graders with caramel nut apples to enjoy later.

Both the third graders and Western students had an enjoyable time with each other.  Western students also saw it as the opportunity to get involved outside of campus.

Area High School Students Participate in Western Challenge

Twenty-two high-ability area high school students recently spent a day on campus participating in the "Western Challenge." Throughout their day, the students met with five faculty members to discuss discipline-centered topics with the general theme of "Perceptions and Reality."

Faculty participants were Dr. Ben Caldwell, associate professor of chemistry; Dr. Dan Cox, assistant professor of government; Dr. Kelly Henry, assistant professor of psychology; Dr. Jeff Poet, assistant professor of math; and Dr. Brent Walker, assistant professor of physical education.

Dr. Brian Mann, office of continuing education director of extended campus, and the Western VIPs also helped with the event.

A second Western Challenge day for the students is planned for April 15, 2004.

Western Hosts Public Forum on Patriot Act

Western  will host a forum to discuss the U.S. Patriot Act 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Leah Spratt Multipurpose Classroom Building Kemper Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the community.

Featured speakers are Todd Graves, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, and Dick Kurtenbach, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and western Missouri. After two rounds of opening statements, Graves and Kurtenbach will respond to questions from the audience.

"The U.S. Patriot Act is an issue which we know is being discussed in a number of classes on campus, but there seems to be widespread disagreement over exactly what the Act authorizes and how it is being used," said Dr. Mark Mikkelsen, associate professor of philosophy. "We hope by bringing two distinguished spokesmen on both sides of the issue together we can foster better, more informed public debate of the issue."

The U.S. Patriot Act became a law in October 2001 in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept.11.

The event is hosted by the Western Political Science Club. For more information, contact Dr. Dan Cox at (816) 271-4344, cox@missouriwestern.edu, or Mikkelsen at (816)271-4530, mikkelsen@missouriwestern.edu.
