Eggs and Issues

Dr. Gary Clapp, president and CEO of the Institute for Industrial and Applied Life Sciences (IIALS), spoke about the role the industry plays in St. Joseph’s present and its future the first Eggs and Issues of the academic year. The IIALS is a partnership between Western, area businesses, organizations and individuals to promote workforce development. Dr. Clapp has been the Institute’s president and CEO since it was formed in 2006.

Western Professor Earns National Honor

Western associate professor of business Carol Roever was recently honored with the 2007 Meada Gibbs Outstanding Teacher Award from the Association for Business Communication (ABC).

“An honor like this coming from my peers in the profession means a great deal,” said Roever, who has taught in Western’s business department since 1986 and became chairperson last year. She taught the business communication course required of all business majors for 20 years and mentors other faculty teaching the course.

The Meada Gibbs Outstanding Teacher Award recognizes, encourages and rewards excellence in teaching business communication, according to the ABC. Roever received a plaque and a monetary award. She will also present a keynote address at next year’s national conference, something she’s already preparing for. “Speaking to a group of professional communicators is a little nerve-wracking,” Roever said. “But it’s also a tremendous honor. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Roever was honored for her contributions to the teaching of business communication, her international emphasis, her use of technology in the classroom and her positive effect on students, according to the ABC.

In materials she submitted after being nominated for the award, Roever literally “spelled out” her teaching philosophy, using “TEACHER” as an acronym:

·         Touch the lives of others

·         Exhibit energy and enthusiasm for the subject

·         Always be ready to adapt and learn new things

·         Cooperate and collaborate with students and colleagues

·         Humility – a valuable trait of outstanding teachers

·         Ethical behavior should be our norm

·         Recognizing the steadfast principles of effective communication.

“Consistently over the years, students have rated Carol as one of the best teachers on the Western campus,” wrote Dr. Jeanne Daffron, associate vice president for academic and student affairs and interim graduate dean, in a letter supporting Roever’s nomination for the award. Western alumni now employed at KPMG LLP, Bayer HealthCare, Bank Midwest and the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation submitted letters of support, as did several students from Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey, where Roever was a visiting professor in the fall of 2005. “An exemplary professor who truly cares about her students’ success … absolutely dedicated to her students … whether it was about an assignment or just to talk, it didn’t matter – she was always there … not only an excellent academic but also a concerned friend … I hope I can be like her someday,” wrote her former students.

Roever created and co-teaches the International Business: Global Viewpoint course. She has taken more than 140 Western students on seven trips to England, Scotland, Finland, Sweden, Germany, New Zealand and Turkey.

Roever won the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Western Board of Governors in 2005 and was twice the recipient of Western’s Jesse Lee Myers Excellence in Teaching Award. She was previously honored by the ABC with its “Spirit of ABC” Award two years ago.

Roever served as a member of the ABC Board of Directors from 2001 to 2006. She earned a Master of Science degree in organizational communication from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a Bachelor of Science degree in communication studies from Northwestern University.

iGEM Reception

A reception was held for the team of students who traveled to MIT to participate in the 2007 iGEM competition. For their contribution of genetic parts and their website, poster and oral presentations, the Missouri Western/Davidson College team was recognized with gold medal status, the highest level of participation. At the reception students were presented with award certificates. Attendees viewed a PowerPoint presentation with pictures from the trip, toured the website of iGEM projects and observed some glowing bacterial computers. Cake and punch were served. Pictured right are three of the students who received awards at the reception: Michelle Ritter, Jordan Baumgardner and Jessica Treece.

Alumni Association Gives Back with Western Wednesdays

The St. Joseph chapter of the Western Alumni Association would like to give back to the community this holiday season. At 5:30 p.m. Nov. 28 Western Wednesday will be held at the Bucket Shop, 5225 Lake Ave., but there’s a twist.

All who attend are encouraged to bring one item for the Adopt-a-Family gift closet. Families who are not adopted by the community are able to go to the closet and choose gifts for the holiday. Items that are most in need include gifts for teenage boys and the elderly.

“We encourage all Western alumni to join us in supporting Adopt-a-Family,” said Zach Ramsey, ’02, chair of the St. Joseph alumni chapter. As an added incentive Western alumnus and owner of the Bucket Shop, Jeff Zimmerman, ’94, will take 10 percent off every ticket for those who donate.

Other locations for Western Wednesdays include Fred P. Ott’s in Overland Park, Kan., Forge & Vine in Columbia, Mo., and Seamus McDaniel’s in St. Louis.

Western Establishes Nursing Scholarship

A new nursing scholarship for full-time nursing students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher was recently established at Western. The Glenn A. and Anita M. Miller Nursing Scholarship was created by Anita Miller’s daughter Julianna Warren. Anita passed away in August 2007 from a rare pulmonary disease. The family was touched by the nurses from hospice that were so caring but seemed to have worked so hard to overcome hardships in their lives.

“We’re grateful to the Miller family,” Dan Nicoson, vice president for university advancement and executive director of the MWSU foundation, said. “At a time when the United States faces a shortage of nurses, Western’s excellent nursing program fills a great need. This gift will give students facing hardships the resources to complete the program, receive their degree and enter the workforce.”

Preference will be given to those candidates with special interest in geriatrics or pulmonary illness. Recipient will have been deemed by the selection committee to be facing unusual hardship. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should contact the financial aid office at 4361.
