SGA Debate

Nursing Students to Discuss Honduras Trip

Students from the nursing program at Western will discuss this summer’s trip to Honduras during a program on Nov. 12.

Eleven students and two instructors traveled to Honduras for 12 days in July, serving approximately 2,000 patients through makeshift clinics. They’ll discuss their trip from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Spratt Hall, Room 214. The event is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

The event is sponsored by the Omicron Nu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. For more information, contact assistant nursing professor Julie Baldwin at 5911.

Artwork on Display

Student artwork is on display at Potter Hall. Self portraits are in the hallway leading to the Gallery, and different types of paintings and photographs are on display in the Gallery.

Western to Host Considering College Program

Are you considering college but are a nontraditional student? Do you have a lot of questions? Do you worry about balancing home, school and work? Are you apprehensive about taking notes and tests again?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, consider attending, “How to Be a Successful Nontraditional Student at Missouri Western State University,” from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Nov. 15 and 2-4 p.m. Dec. 12 in Eder Hall, room 208.

There will be discussions about enrolling, getting financial aid, finding resources on campus, finding a major and more. Also, there will be a short tour of the campus.

Western Ambassadors Hold Luncheon

The Western Ambassadors will hold a luncheon Nov. 16 in Spratt Hall, room 214. A social begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by a “Thanksgiving Feast” lunch at noon. Cost is $8.50 per person. The luncheon is open to the community; make reservations by calling Ellen Kisker at 4280 by Nov. 14.

Kip Wilson, associate professor of criminal justice at Western, will give a presentation entitled, “The Mystery of Gathering Evidence,” continuing the “mystery” theme of the year.

The Western Ambassadors serve as a bridge between the college and the community. The group raises money to provide scholarships for nontraditional students.

Tower Sports

Mineral Water Bowl The Griffons (8-3, 6-3 MIAA) have been chosen to play in the 2007 Mineral Water Bowl against the Wayne State Wildcats (7-4, 7-2 NSIC) out of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Griffons and the Wildcats were both chosen to finish 5th in their respective conferences in the pre-season polls, but have done a tremendous job of getting their teams to the Mineral Water Bowl. Missouri Western will be making it’s fifth Mineral Water Bowl appearance. The Griffons have a 3-1 record in the Mineral Water Bowl and are 7-6-1 all time against Wayne State.

Change for Students In honor of National Philanthropy Day®,  Western has kicked off a new philanthropy awareness program, “Change for Students."  The program features educational displays, a fundraising project and Student Philanthropy Awards. During the month of November, posters and tabletop displays will be located around campus to highlight the impact philanthropy has on Western students. In addition, change jars will be placed at dining facilities and the bookstore. Students will be asked to donate spare change to help out their fellow students. All proceeds will benefit the MWSU Foundation’s Student Excellence Fund. The university will also present the MWSU Student Philanthropy Awards on Nov. 30. The awards will be given to individual students or organizations who have made a contribution to their community. Nomination forms are available on the MWSU Development Office website at www.missouriwestern.edu/development. Completed nomination forms should be returned to the Development Office, Spratt Hall 108, no later than Nov. 19. For more information, contact Johnson at 5920.

Griffon Yearbook The 2007 Griffon is now be available in the library at the front desk. Students must show ID to pick it up. Yearbooks may be picked up for free as long as you were a full-time student for the 2006-2007 academic year; otherwise cost is $10. Yearbooks are available during library hours: Monday through Thursday- 7 a.m. - 11 p.m., Friday- 7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday- 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday- 2-11 p.m.
