Western Students Promote a College Education “That’s what you need to do – study hard.” “What do you like to do? What careers interest you?” Those were some of the words of encouragement and questions heard throughout the room last week as Western freshmen visited with students from the Buchanan County Academy (BCA). As part of a pilot program intended to encourage BCA students to think about their futures and a college education, the 15 younger students toured campus and took part in interviews with 22 Western students from a College 101: Freshman Seminar course. “The Buchanan County Academy students may not be looking at college or they may have a negative attitude about education,” said Dawn Terrick, instructor of English and coordinator of the activity. “The BCA students can get insight and encouragement, and our students can become empowered by helping them.” The students interviewed each other about their educational experiences, and Western students were required to write an analysis and reflection of the interview. “I thought the interview went very well, and I think the kids enjoyed themselves,” said Western student Nikki Cross of St. Joseph. “I hope they got a positive feeling on campus and that they want to come to Missouri Western. They said they want to go to college here.” The Western students are members of one of the university’s 11 Learning Communities, where a group of students are enrolled in two or three courses together. These students are enrolled in both College 101: Freshman Seminar and an English course. “This is my favorite class,” Jarod Powell, from St. Louis. Powell said of the College 101 course. “It helps me a lot; I’ve learned a lot about college and everyday life. I learn something every day.” The Learning Community will also visit St. Patrick Elementary School in St. Joseph and work with the younger students three times this semester.

New Western-Produced Television Show “Western Reports” is on the air. This month, Western's new magazine-style television program debuted, hosted by sophomore Megan Glenn. The 30-minute program, produced at the beginning of each month, can be seen at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturdays. It is on St. Joseph Cablevision channel 39 and Charter Communications of Atchison, Kan., channel 97. “We want to people to become better informed about what is happening at Western, and what Western has to offer,” said Danielle Hunt, television services manager and coordinator of the new program. She said the program running throughout October features interviews with Dr. James Scanlon, Western’s president; and Dr. Kelly Henry, director of applied learning. Next month’s program will feature student organizations. “I’m excited about it. I enjoy finding out about campus activities, and I enjoyed interviewing Dr. Scanlon,” Glenn, a business management major from St. Joseph, said. She believes that interviewing administrators, faculty and fellow students has helped build her confidence, and is giving her great experience for her career. Hunt noted that more programming has also been added to the daily lineup from Annenberg/PBS 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 1 – 4 p.m. Sundays. Series currently being shown include “Art of the Western World,” “A Biography of America” and “Economics U$A.” Future series will include features on languages, science, history and literature. She said the Instructional Media Center welcomes feedback and story ideas from viewers. Hunt can be contacted at 4298.

| "Beyond 2010," the new addition to Western's outside artwork, is a contemporary sculpture that was created by Jim Estes, professor of art. It is located east of Potter Hall. | ||||||||

New Sculpture on Western's Campus Just east of Potter hall, a black metal monolith reaches up to the sky. Its crossbars at the top are arranged at interesting angles, and a smaller piece rests at its side. That is “Beyond 2010,” a new contemporary sculpture that now graces the campus of Western, thanks to the work of Jim Estes, professor of art. “I hope the structure is a visually pleasing work for our campus,” said Estes. “I don’t have a hidden message in it, but if it makes people curious, that’s good. Hopefully people will enjoy its beauty.” Estes, who has taught at Western for 35 years and created works for over 130 shows all over the country, said he had never created an outdoor sculpture before. When he received the Distinguished Professor Award in 2004 and was given $1,000 for professional development, his proposal was to design and build the sculpture. He had to learn all about MIG welding and figure out the logistics of purchasing materials for a large sculpture, and make sure the 600-pound structure would balance on a concrete base. There was no room to stand it up until the work of art was completed. “I wanted a change of direction as I look toward the waning years of my profession. It’s nice at this point in my career to be embarking on things I haven’t figured out; that’s exciting.” He said he learned a lot about sculpting large pieces, and he hopes to create more. He is already working on the design for a much larger second piece for Western’s campus. Estes said he chose a contemporary design because he believes Western is looking ahead, changing and growing. “I wanted the spirit of a forward-looking institution to be reflected in that.”
