Well, not everybody was cheering on the Chiefs, as a few Niners fans attended as well (left). The three Chiefs Cheerleaders who dropped in (right) are all Western alumnae.

Art Floats

Students in Neil Lawley's 3-Dimensional Design class designed, built and tested personal flotation devices (or life jackets) as part of a class project. Students were allowed to use any materials they wanted, using as much found recycled materials as possible. The basic requirements are that it be well-designed, both aesthetically and functionally, be able to buoy the students' weight in the pool, and be re-useable. Presentations were given in class beforehand, including detailed drawings and a scale model. "The true purpose of this project was to have the students go through the entire design process, from brainstorming to execution," said Lawley, assistant professor of art. "I wanted them to balance aesthetics with function to produce an object to be used in their next assignment - building a boat."

Of Bugs, Creeks and Kids

The bugs tell the story, and elementary school students came on campus to listen. Students from St. Joseph School District’s gifted and talented program met with two Missouri American Water Company employees, a Conservation Department employee and a worker from the Department of Natural Resources last week to count bugs in Otoe Creek on Western’s campus.

In October 2009, several Western students, along with Dr. Pat McMurry, professor of economics, Western employee Craig Darrough, and Lisa Adams, a Missouri American Water employee, cleaned up trash along the creek. So the purpose of Wednesday’s gathering was to conduct a bug count to see if their numbers had increased since the clean up, compared to the bug count prior to the clean-up.

Teacher Gwen Funk brought 10 elementary students to campus to help. “We’re trying to show them that water quality is going to be a major issue,” she said. “And these are our future problem solvers.”

Lisa noted that cleaning up the creek will continue because last year the group found a dump site with thousands of cans and an old car along the creek. Otoe Creek runs under the bridge at the bottom of the hill on McCarthy Drive.

Politicians Come to Western

Missouri Western is proving a popular stop for politicians this fall. Congressman Roy Blunt (left) visited the Christopher S. "Kit" Bond Science and Technology Incubator to visit with incubator tenants and other small business owners. Former Arkansas governor and 2008 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee (center) spoke to nearly 500 people in attendance at the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce Fall Chairman's Brunch on Sept. 30. And former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (right) will be the guest of honor at the annual Convocation Dinner Oct. 6 and the Convocation on Critical Issues Oct. 7.

Officers Honored

During a brief ceremony this week, Officers Dennis Johnson and James Bench (left) were presented with Meritorious Conduct Awards for helping to save the life of a fan who suffered a heart attack just before the first Griffon football game of the season Sept. 2. Also during the ceremony, Chief Jon Kelley presented awards for length of service to five members of the department, including Corporal Bob Bidding (right).
