Sept. 11, the center for multicultural education presented an all-day event called "The Fate of Hate." Outside the Blum Union Courtyard were handmade signs that displayed victims of hate crimes. Inside the Blum Union was a table and more displays.  Shown in the picture is Tay Triggs, director of the CME; Orthel Littles, a Western student; and Temeca White, a graduate student intern from UMKC.

Jennifer Koebel is the new SGA representative for students with disabilities.

SGA Names Disability Representative

Western’s SGA (Student Government Association) created a permanent position for a representative of students with disabilities, and Jennifer Koebel was named to fill the role this fall.

“I feel it is a huge milestone,” said Koebel, who is wheelchair bound. “I want to increase awareness of the need of accessibility and open-mindedness.”

Michael Ritter, coordinator of Western’s disability services, said he was very pleased when Koebel related the news, calling it a great opportunity to make others aware of students with disabilities. “It’s not that people don’t care about disabilities, it’s that they don’t think about it unless they have a family member or friend.”

Koebel, who hopes to graduate in spring 2008, said the permanent position was necessary because students with disabilities do not have time to campaign for a SGA Senate seat. “Just classes and homework can take too long; there would be no time to campaign.”

“Jenny is a fantastic young lady who inspires me daily,” said Ritter.

Western's Ambassadors Bridge Campus and Community

In gold mining, 99 percent of what the workers sift through is dirt, and only one percent of the time do they come up with gold, but that one time makes it all worthwhile. Western Ambassadors are a lot like gold miners, said Dr. Jimmy Albright, senior pastor at Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph, who was the speaker at the Ambassadors first of four campus luncheons of the academic year.

Dr. Albright said that Ambassadors must be willing to dig deep, search wide and use every method they can find to unearth the treasures they seek – new members. “The gold is there,” he said. “An Ambassador must be willing to use multiple approaches to find the valuable, to find the gold.”

The Western Ambassadors, a group of university and community women, serves as a vital link between the university and the community of St. Joseph. The organization does this through activities and programs to increase the community’s awareness of the educational, cultural and financial benefits that Western brings to the greater St. Joseph area.

The Ambassadors have chosen nontraditional or re-entry students as their primary focus, as the greatest growth in student populations is among adults who are pursuing educational goals which have been delayed or those who desire to seek new career opportunities. Each year the group hosts “Night at the Ritz,” a fund-raiser for nontraditional student scholarships.

According to the Ambassadors’ brochure, “Bridging the Campus and the Community,” since 1989, more than 270 nontraditional students have been provided $170,000 to help pay for their education.

Senior Peg Pella is a recipient of an Ambassador scholarship. “The Ambassadors scholarship has done more than help me financially,” Pella said. “Their faith in me helps me believe that life still has possibilities at my age. The Ambassadors scholarship makes my education possible and my dreams a reality.”

New members are always welcome to join. Annual dues are $18 per year and may be sent to Ellen Kisker, Ambassador liaison. She can be reached at 4280 for more information or to join.

Attention Student Organizations: Campus Trademark Office Reminder

The start of a new academic year is a good time to remind student organizations about Western’s licensing program, in the event they want to purchase products with Western’s trademarked logos or wordmarks (use of the words “Western, Missouri Western State University, etc.).

Any group that wants to purchase merchandise such as t-shirts, hats or promotional items that display the Western logos, tagline or wordmark, must comply with the Trademark Licensing Program. That means they must purchase products only from a licensed manufacturer, and all artwork must be approved by the Public Relations/Marketing Office before production of the item begins, according to Diane Holtz, coordinator of the Licensing Office. She noted that the company that is actually manufacturing the product must obtain the license from the Western office.

“Students often don’t realize that our logos, including the new Max, are registered trademarks, meaning their images are protected. If any student group wants to use any logo or wordmark, the artwork must be approved by our office,” said. Holtz. She noted that if the organizations work with Campus Printing and Design Services, then Kendy Jones, director, will approve the artwork.

Most local vendors are already licensed. If organizations want to purchase from a manufacturer that is not currently licensed, it is not difficult for a manufacturer to become licensed. The manufacturer should contact the Trademark Licensing Office to begin the application process. “We will do everything we can to expedite the process and not hold up the order, but it may take a little extra time,” said Holtz.

For a list of licensed manufacturers or questions, contact Holtz in the Trademark Licensing Office located in Spratt Hall, room 106, 5651.

Lisenbee opened the tournament with an 81 in the opening round but bounced back to fire a 3-under par 69 during the second round to jump into eighth place overall and hold that spot until the end of the tournament. Other teammates such as Daniel Cordray and Shane Feist helped contribute to the fourth place win.
