Gingrich Dinner Sold Out

The 17th annual Convocation on Critical Issues, featuring former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, is proving to be very popular. The Convocation at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 7 in the M.O. Looney Complex is free and open to the public.

“The response to Mr. Gingrich has been tremendous,” said Dan Nicoson, vice president for university advancement. “We expected him to be a popular speaker, but this has exceeded our expectations.”

The Convocation Dinner on Oct. 6, a reservation-only event the night before the Convocation, is already sold out, more than two weeks before the reservation deadline. The university advancement office has established a waiting list for dinner reservations.

“This is a bittersweet situation,” Nicoson said. “We’re pleased that so many people want to hear what Mr. Gingrich has to say, but we regret that some may not be able to attend the dinner. The good news is that those who can’t go to the dinner will still be able to hear his main presentation at the Convocation on Oct. 7.”

Nicoson asks that anyone who has reservations to the dinner but is unable to come to call the university advancement office at 816-271-5670 to cancel, so that others may be accommodated. This is the second time in three years the dinner has sold out, he said. The previous sell-out was in 2008 when commentators James Carville and Mary Matalin spoke five weeks prior to the presidential election.

Gingrich is well known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. Under his leadership as Speaker, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation and the first tax cut in 16 years. In addition, Congress restored funding to strengthen our defense and intelligence capabilities, an action later lauded by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.

Gingrich has also authored 19 books, including 11 fiction and non-fiction New York Times bestsellers. He is chairman of the Gingrich Group, a communications and consulting firm that specializes in transformational change. He serves as general chairman of American Solutions for Winning the Future, is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, honorary chairman of the NanoBusiness Alliance and a news and political analyst for the Fox News Channel.

Gingrich was first elected to Congress in 1978 and served the Sixth District of Georgia for 20 years. He served as House Speaker from 1995 to 1999, and was named Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1995.

Western inaugurated the Convocation program in 1993 as part of an overall commitment to offer enriching experiences to students while bringing together the college and community. The Convocation program is sponsored by the MWSU Foundation and is held in honor of R. Dan Boulware, former Western regent.

Past Convocation speakers have included Bill Bradley, James Carville and Mary Matalin, Sam Donaldson, Steve Forbes, David Gergen, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Jeane Kirkpatrick, Jerry Linenger, David McCullough, Dr. Joseph Nye, Dr. Colin Powell, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Daniel Schorr, Patricia Schroeder, J.C. Watts, and Bob Woodward.
