Western Approves Tuition Rate for 2006-07

The Western Board of Governors approved the first increase in four years with a $9 per credit hour increase in tuition at their April meeting, making the tuition $155 per credit-hour.

“Our goal is to achieve affordable excellence. With every decision we put our students first. Students who came to Western three years ago as freshmen will experience their first increase in tuition. We take pride in this record,” said Western President Dr. James Scanlon.

With tuition and fees, a student will now pay $2,119 for a 12 credit-hour semester. The increase was below the state average. If taken over a four-year average, the increase equals about $3 a year as Western has not increased tuition for three years. In addition, Western is expected to remain among the most affordable universities in the state, said Rick Gilmore, associate vice president for financial planning and administration.

“Western commits 83 percent, among the highest percentage in the state, of its resources to instruction and direct support of students. Our faculty has demonstrated great professionalism in providing quality instruction with limited resources. These efforts have allowed us to serve students well while trying to minimize the cost to our students. This is what we mean by affordable excellence,” Dr. Scanlon added.

The first Disability Services Banquet, held April 21, honored three groups: 15 students who volunteered this semester to take notes for disabled students, 13 professors who “go the extra mile” to help disabled students be successful, and 15 disabled students who will graduate in May. Left: Mike Ritter, director of disability services, and Dr. Judy Grimes, dean of student services.

Disability Services Banquet Held

It was a dinner to celebrate the human spirit, according to Mike Ritter, director of disability services. The first Disability Services Banquet, held April 21, honored three groups: 15 students who volunteered this semester to take notes for disabled students, 13 professors who “go the extra mile” to help disabled students be successful, and 15 disabled students who will graduate in May. “We wanted to celebrate altruism, teamwork and determination,” he said.

The volunteer note takers honored are Brittany Aitchison, Nancy Allsbury, Kris Bailey, April Baines, Mary Dean, Nancy Diederich, Cassandra Donley, Mary Ernst, Summer Gemmell, Lacey Lincoln, Casey Nichols, Miranda Patti, Ghazala Saleem, Alicia Schmidgall, and Sara Stafford.

The professors who were honored were nominated by students with disabilities. They include Freda Allen, Bill Church, Dr. Teddi Deka, Dr. Deborah Freedman, Dr. James Huntermark, Dr. Joachim Kibirige, Dr. Monica Nandan, Dr. Allison Sauls, Dr. Patricia Scott, Dr. Sandie Seeger, Dr. Michael Smith, Dawn Terrick and Dr. Mei Zhang.

Ritter said he had a great response for his request for volunteer note takers this semester, but he believes more will be needed for next semester. He hopes to make the dinner an annual event.
