The Midwestern Innocence Project Comes to Western Western will host a presentation called “Wrongful Convictions: The Midwestern Innocence Project” at 1 p.m. April 18 in the Kemper Recital Hall, Spratt Hall room 101. From 1992-2005 there were 159 inmates exonerated of serious crimes through post-conviction review of cases utilizing DNA testing. A total of 1,652 years was spent in prison by 146 of these exonerees, roughly 12 years per innocent person. Tiffany Murphy, assistant clinical professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and legal director of the Midwestern Innocence Project, will talk about cases the project has handled. The Midwestern Innocence Project provides pro-bono investigative and legal assistance to prisoners with persuasive claims of innocence. They accomplish this by reviewing requests from prisoners in the Midwest, selecting cases with substantial innocence claims and working with University of Missouri-Kansas City law school students, volunteers and other justice programs to obtain the release of innocent prisoners through judicial proceedings or executive clemency. For more information contact David Tushaus, chair of the department of criminal justice and legal studies, at 5627. |
