Missouri Supreme Court Judge to Visit Campus Missouri Supreme Court Judge Mary Russell will give a presentation on the Missouri Supreme Court process, including how cases are received and decided, at 11 a.m. March 31 in Spratt Hall, Kemper Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the community. Judge Russell is a native of Hannibal, Mo., and graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia (UM-C) School of Law in 1983. Upon graduation, she clerked for the Honorable George Gunn of the Supreme Court of Missouri; and then practiced law in Hannibal with the law firm of Clayton and Rhodes until her appointment to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, in 1995. At the Court of Appeals, she served as Chief Judge from 1999 to 2000. She was sworn into the Supreme Court in 2004 and her term will expire Dec. 31, 2006. Judge Russell is active in many professional organizations, including the Missouri Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the National Association of Women Judges, and the Women Lawyers Association of St. Louis. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Faculty/Alumni Award from UM-C; the Citation of Merit Award from the UM-C Law School; Legal Services of Eastern Missouri Equal Justice Award; and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Truman State University. |

Dr. Tim Crowley to Speak at Eggs & Issues Dr. Tim Crowley, senior counselor at Western, will give a presentation entitled “Owner’s Manual for Success: How to Create the Life You Really Want … Today” at Eggs and Issues, a free breakfast presentation for the campus and the community. Dr. Crowley will speak at 7 a.m. April 13 in the Fulkerson Center. To make a reservation for the free breakfast, call 5646 by April 7. Dr. Crowley has been a counselor at Western for more than 18 years. He has presented workshops and has been the keynote speaker at local, state, national and international conferences. His topics have included managing change and transition, team building, humor in the workplace and stress management. |

Call for Board Member Nominations
The Alumni Association Board of Directors at Western is now accepting nominations for new board members. Nomination applications are available online at www.griffonalumni.org, or by calling the Alumni Services Office at 5676. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 1.
The Alumni Association board is responsible for planning several alumni events and activities throughout the year. Board members must be a graduate of Western or have attended the St. Joseph Junior College. New board members are elected by current board members and will serve three-year terms beginning July 1.
Distinguished Service Awards
The Alumni Association is also accepting nominations for the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Service Awards through May 1. Anyone is eligible to submit a nomination for the Distinguished Alumni Award or Distinguished Faculty award.
To be eligible for the Alumni Award, there must be a time difference of at least five years between graduation and the nomination. The criteria for consideration includes professional achievement and distinction; service to the community, state or nation; humanitarian contribution to society in general; and possession of those qualities that elicit pride from others who attended the same educational institution. The awardee must be able to attend the awards banquet, parade and football game Homecoming weekend.
Criteria for the distinguished faculty award include teaching excellence, availability to students, professional accomplishments and potential, lasting influence on students, and professional and ethical standards.
Nominations may be made online at Western’s website, www.missouriwestern.edu, by clicking on “Alumni,” then “Alumni Recognition.” Individuals may also contact the alumni office at 816-271-5676 to obtain an application. A letter of recommendation must accompany the application. Forms and letters can be mailed to MWSU Alumni Services, 4525 Downs Drive, St. Joseph, MO. 64507.
Brown Bag Lunch Series The Alumni Association will host a brown bag lunch from 12-1 p.m. March 30 in Spratt Hall, Enright Room, 214. Alumni are invited to bring their lunch and listen to guest speaker Dan Jackson, ’79, health and safety associate for the Midland Empire Chapter of American Red Cross. He will talk about the importance of CPR and give a CPR demonstration. The next lunches in the series will be held April 27 and May 25. A Western alumnus will be the speaker each month. Music Department Presents Benefit Concert The music department at Western will put on a Benefit Showcase Concert at 3 p.m. April 2 at the Missouri Theater, 717 Edmond. The concert is free but donations will be accepted. Proceeds will be used to upgrade the department’s electronic piano classroom.
The concert will feature the Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers, Symphonic Winds, jazz ensembles, percussion soloists, string quartet and faculty artist Lee Harrelson playing the tuba.
