Engaging Students in Professional Development

On March 10, four Western physical therapy assistant students joined their instructor, Maureen Raffensperger, pictured far right, as she presented a half-day seminar, "Balance Dysfunction in the Elderly: Predicting and Preventing Falls." Students assisted in training over 40 area health care personnel including Mitzi Tedlock, sitting, and Kathy Duvault, third from left.

Campus Discovers Gold

Displaying the Discover Gold t-shirts at the Discover Gold Fest are, from left, Kendy Jones, director of campus printing services; Diane Holtz, of the Institutional Advancement Office; Kristy Hill, director of public relations and marketing; and Julie Lawrence, director of alumni services.

Western officially launched its new brand, "Discover Gold," March 8 with a week of contests, displays, office visits and t-shirt giveaways.

There is still time to enter the Gold Standard Contest for a chance to win $100! Employees and students may go online at www.missouriwestern.edu/discovergold and tell how they have discovered gold at Western, or tell us about their "golden" experiences. That contest will run until 4:30 p.m. April 1, and each entry will be entered into a drawing for $100. There will be a drawing for students and a drawing for employees.

If you didn’t win one of the 40 t-shirts given away during the Discover Gold Rush, 100% cotton Discover Gold t-shirts are now available for $5 in the Public Relations/Marketing Office. People had a chance to sign up for a t-shirt at the three Discover Gold Fests, or to participate in the online Golden Trivia Contest. Forty-one employees and students submitted entries to the trivia contest, and 18 received t-shirts for getting at least six of seven correct answers.

"We had fantastic participation in the Discover Gold launch activities," said Kristy Hill, director of public relations and marketing. She said almost 150 people signed up for t-shirts at the Discover Gold Fest displays on campus Monday and Tuesday in the JGM and the Student Union Lounge, and over 120 employees attended Wednesday’s Discover Gold Fest. The displays included how the new brand will be used and samples of the new advertising campaign.

The week also found the Public Relations/Marketing Office all over campus with "Gold on the Go," where staff delivered gift bags with gold coins and "Discover Gold" magnets to every employee. They spoke at 28 staff meetings across campus, and delivered gift bags to 19 more departments.

"It was important for our Western family to understand the campaign before we begin promoting it in the community, and the internal launch helped us create that awareness," said Hill. I hope the campus will continue to check the Discover Gold website to see how we plan to use the campaign to align our image with our strategic focus."

The Discover Gold website address is www.missouriwestern.edu/discovergold.
