Play Ball!

A picture-perfect historic home opener didn't have a perfect ending. Missouri Western fell 8-3 to #3 ranked Central Missouri Thursday afternoon in the first game ever held at the new Spring Sports Complex. It also marked the first ever baseball game played on campus in the program's 40 year history. "That was amazing," said Western Head Baseball Coach Buzz Verduzco. "To see us on campus--it was exciting and I thought we came out and competed for six innings. Unfortunately it's a nine inning game." The series continues with a doubleheader Friday and a single game Saturday at noon.

J. Cole Headlines WAC Spring Concert

After Keri Hilson was forced to cancel her April appearance, the Western Activities Council, or WAC, had to scramble to find a replacement act for their spring concert. Fortunately, one of their other top choices was available.

American rapper and producer J. Cole will headline the annual WAC Spring Concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 at the St. Joseph Civic Arena. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Jeremih will be the opening act.

All Western students can receive one free ticket with their student ID in the Student Government Office, Blum Union room 217, through Friday, April 1. All other tickets are available through Ticketmaster. They are $25 through April 1 and $35 April 2-6. A $2 facility fee will be added to each ticket sold.

J. Cole, born Jermaine Cole in North Carolina, is best known for being the first artist to be signed to Jay-Z's label Roc Nation after Jay-Z heard Cole's single ''Lights Please.'' He released his debut mix tape ''The Come Up'' in 2008 and followed it up with ''The Warm Up'' in 2009 and ''Friday Night Lights'' in 2010. He has appeared on the cover of ''The Source'' and ''Beyond Race'' magazines, and was featured as one of XXL's 2010 Freshman. Cole appeared on Jay-Z's 2009 album ''The Blueprint 3,'' on the track ''A Star is Born.''

Taking from his favorite artists a love for powerful storytelling with an intense inner-strength, J. Cole advanced to writing his own lyrics at age 15. Soulful and strong, J. Cole's lyrics touch on everything from his upbringing in North Carolina to the poverty and hopelessness that affect his community. The mix tape summarizes not just who J. Cole is as a rapper, but who he is as an artist and a person.

The opening act, Jeremih, was nominated for the Outstanding New Artist in the 2010 NAACP Image Awards and the T-Mobile Soul/R&B Breakthrough Artist in the 2009 American Music Awards.

Dr. Looney Visits Western

Dr. Marvin Looney, who was president of Missouri Western from 1967-1983, recently visited the campus. He was interviewed by the Instructional Media Center about his memories of his time as president, which included Western's transition to a four-year institution in 1969.
