Board of Governors Approves Emergency Notification System The Western Board of Governors approved an investment in the safety of the university’s students, faculty and staff, authorizing the purchase of a comprehensive emergency notification system. “These tools help insure that we can quickly notify the campus community in the event of a crisis,” said Ron Olinger, vice president for financial planning and administration. The new system meets the recommendation of Governor Matt Blunt’s Campus Security Task Force that colleges and universities use the best available technology to reach all stakeholders quickly, said Olinger, a member of the task force. The system is comprised of four parts: · Text messaging service. Emergency messages will be sent to the cell phones of students and employees who choose to subscribe to the service. · Indoor emergency beacons. Approximately 100 emergency beacons with audio and visual alarms, LCD text displays and text-to-voice annunciators will be placed inside campus buildings to allow for the communication of emergency information. On the exterior of each building, two beacons equipped with strobe lights will be installed. · Outdoor public address system. Speakers will be placed on the Glenn E. Marion Memorial Clock Tower, residence halls and Spratt Memorial Stadium to broadcast emergency messages. · Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) system. The university will use the Ethernet network connection in each classroom to economically install telephones, allowing two-way communication in the event of an emergency. Initial equipment and installation costs are estimated to total $203,010. Recurring costs will total approximately $11,900 for the first year. |

Western Names Duane Bruce Associate Dean of Student Development Duane Bruce has been named associate dean of student development at Western. Bruce has had significant experience in student leadership development, judicial review, code of conduct administration and working with student clubs and organizations. He will begin his duties at Western on March 3. Bruce is a 1999 graduate of Missouri Western in business administration and management. He went on to earn his master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Kansas while serving as the director of University Scholarship Hall and as a graduate intern in the office of admissions and scholarships. In 2001 he returned to Western to be the student success communications and orientation coordinator. Since 2003 Bruce has been the assistant dean for new student programs at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At Marquette, he was a member of the University’s Athletics Equity Committee, served on the Helping Abuse and Violence End Now Committee, was liaison to the University’s Committee on Academic Policies and served on the Division of Student Affairs Assessment Committee. Bruce recently completed a term on the Board of Directors of the National Orientation Directors Association and he is a member of NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. As advisor to Western’s Student Government Association, one of Bruce’s chief responsibilities will be to work closely with the University’s Student Senate and SGA officers. “Duane knows how to effectively cultivate leadership and teamwork within an organization and is committed to developing students who act as catalysts of change,” said Brock Banks, student government president at Marquette University. “As a student leader, I believe that he will be a very valuable resource and role model for students in the Student Government Association at Western.” “Mr. Bruce is one of the most thoughtful, strategic, and social justice-minded student affairs administrators I know,” said colleague Dr. Shaun R. Harper from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. “Surely his dynamic leadership in the student affairs division will help the University actualize its goals for student success.” “The search committee feels that Mr. Bruce demonstrated exceptional energy and vision in his previous positions and would bring an abundance of those qualities to his duties here at Western,” Dr. Judy Grimes, dean of student services and interim dean of student development said. “We think he will relate exceptionally well to Western’s entire student population.” “I am excited about the opportunity of working as the associate dean of student development and will enjoy the opportunity to give back to a community that has been so instrumental in preparing me for success as a professional,” Mr. Bruce said. “As an alumnus of Western I believe I am strongly connected to the values, mission and traditions that make the community so strong and vibrant.” “Duane is an exceptionally able young man that will provide the leadership in student development we have been seeking,” Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Joseph Bragin said. “We are extremely proud of him as a new employee and an alumnus.” |
