GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (GED)

The Tests of General Educational Development (GED Tests) are developed by the American Council on Education to enable persons who have not graduated from high school to demonstrate the attainment of developed abilities normally acquired through completion of a high school program of study.

The GED Tests are five tests in the areas of:

  1. Language Arts, Writing
  2. Social Studies
  3. Science
  4. Language Arts, Reading
  5. Mathematics

These tests contain multiple-choice questions that test your ability to understand and use information or ideas. In many cases, you are asked to use the information provided to solve a problem, find causes and effects, or make a judgment. In addition to the multiple-choice questions, the Writing Skills Test includes an essay section in which you write an essay on the topic given. The topics are designed to be very general.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to take the GED test, an applicant must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Be 17 years of age and out of school at least 6 months from the last day of school attendance.

Test Preparation Classes

Adult Basic Education provides free classes for anyone 18 years of age and older without a high school diploma. Both daytime and evening classes are available in preparation for taking the GED. Flexible scheduling, individualized instruction, and a relaxed atmosphere permit a student to progress at his/her own learning rate. A student may begin a class anytime during the year and is not required to complete the program within a predetermined time period. Certified personnel conduct all classes. Interested persons may call the Adult Learning Center at 816-671-4020 for more information.
