Game Rules
Intramural Volleyball
A. Team Captain Duties and Responsibilities:
-
Make sure the team roster has been submitted to the Intramural Office and that
substitutes are added.
-
Fill out the game roster at least five minutes before game time.
-
Meet with the game official(s) for coin toss and last minute instructions.
-
Must be on the playing field or sidelines at all times. Must designate an on-file
captain if he/she is not playing.
-
Only captains may address officials for interpretations of rules.
-
File protest of game if needed. Protests may only be filed concerning an
ineligible player or a misinterpretation of a rule. The protest must be submitted in writing to the Intramural office by 4:30 p.m. the day following the contest in question.
-
Make sure that a ref is provided for the game following each of your games.
B. General Game Rules:
-
Six players constitute a team. A team may not play with less than 4 players. If the team is a coed team, there must be more women than men.
-
Matches are best 2 out of 3 games. A game shall consist of 15 points and the winning team must be 2 points ahead for game to end. Only the serving team can score points. The teams change sides at the end of each game. One time out per team per game (1 minute). The rest period between games is two minutes.
-
A toss of the coin determines who gets the choice of either the serve or the court side. The losing team gets first service of the next game. If necessary, the third game service is determined by another toss of the coin.
-
Each member of the team shall serve in turn and has one trial to get the ball clearly over the net. A ball striking the antenna or the net, or going out of bounds, is considered a dead ball and is given to the opposing team to serve.
-
The server shall start the serve from anywhere behind the red endline.
-
Except on the serve (see Rule #4), the ball is still live if it hits any part of the net.
-
In playing the ball, all players must clearly hit or bat the ball. Players are not permitted to scoop or hold the ball.
-
In playing a ball it is legal to use any part of the body above the waist.
-
A ball touching the body more than once except when blocking a ball is a dead ball and goes to the opposing team.
-
It is legal for a player to block a spike and subsequently be able to legally hit the ball again (one hit). A block is defined as a ball struck above the height of the net on the team's first contact. Teams are allowed a maximum of three contacts (blocks are considered a "zero" contact). If playing coed, if there are 2 touches, a female must have one of those.
-
For the ball to be legal, it must pass completely between the antennas without contact.
-
If a ball touches any part of a boundary line it is good.
-
A ball hit into the net by a team may still be kept in play, provided that any player does not touch the net and it is not the fourth team contact.
-
A player may run out of bounds to play a ball provided the ball hasn't completely crossed the plane of the net.
-
The ball is dead if it crosses the net completely outside, touches the antennae, hits any part of a basket, touches the ceiling, net posts, any wall, or lands out of bounds.
-
Players may not touch the net or step completely over the centerline. It is loss of serve if the serving side is at fault, and counts as a point for the serving side if their opponents are at fault. If both sides foul simultaneously the ball is declared dead and is served again.
Note: The hand/arms are allowed to follow-through over the net provided:
-
The player contacted the ball on his/her side unless the opposition
contacted the ball above the net first
-
The player did not touch the net.
-
It is illegal to reach over the net and block a set attempt (the ball must reach the plane of the net first) unless the attempt is the team's third contact.
-
Switching is permissible once the server has contacted the ball.
C. Missouri Western State University Intramural Rules
-
Injuries and Insurance: Students, faculty and staff are reminded that their participation in intramural sports and free-time recreation activities is completely voluntary and the intramural/Free-time Recreation staff assumes no liability or responsibility during participation. It is strongly recommended that all participants have a satisfactory health status and appropriate personal accident insurance coverage for any injury which might occur during participation in these activities. Insurance is available for students through the Dean of Student Affairs Office.
In the event of an injury, the injured player is required to sit out one play and then re-enter the game at the referee’s discretion. In the event of a serious injury, the player is required to sit out the rest of the game.
-
A student must be currently enrolled for at least one hour of credit at Missouri Western State University to be eligible for intramural participation. A faculty or staff member is eligible as long as they are officially recognized by the University as faculty or staff.
-
Any person who has been red-shirted or a member of a freshman, junior varsity or varsity athletic team in the fall or spring at any college or university is ineligible to participate in that specific intramural activity or related activity. They may not participate in the activities listed above until two years following their last collegiate play attempt. Only
one former varsity athlete is allowed on any one intramural team. If the team has a former athlete on it the team must play in the upper division if there is one. For further clarification contact the Intramural Office.
An individual is considered to be a member of a varsity squad if he/she
practices with the team, their name appears on a roster for a regular season game or if
they play spring ball.
-
A player may not transfer from one team to another during a particular activity once they have played in the first game. At the start of a new activity, he/she is then able to transfer to a new team.
-
A player
ejected from a game may not play again in that activity and he/she
may not be substituted for in the game he was ejected from. If a
player is ejected from two contests, he/she may not participate in
Intramurals again.
-
Additional names may be added to the roster as an activity progresses, provided the names are added to the roster 24 hours before the player participates in their first game. Names may not be added to the roster after the last regular season game.
More detailed information on eligibility for Intramural Sports can be obtained from the Intramural Sports Handbook.
