These rules are adopted from the United States Tennis Association and adapted for intramural play at Missouri Western State University.

  1. Players

    1. Players are responsible for turning in their roster.

    2. They are also responsible for bringing the scoring sheet to the supervisor or to the recreation office after play.

  2. Equipment

    1. Racquets and balls can be checked out at the equipment check-out desk by the arena. A valid MWSU ID is required when checking out the equipment. The equipment must be turned in after the match.\

  3. General Rules

    1. Choice of side and right to be server or receiver shall be decided by the toss of a coin. The player winning the toss may choose:

      1. to serve or receive, or

      2. the side of the court.

    2. A match is won when a player wins 2 games.

    3. A game is won by the first player to win 4 points.

    4. Scoring   Love – 0 points
                    15 - 1 point
                    30 - 2 points
                    40 - 3 points
                    Game - 4 points

    5. No-ad scoring will be used for all matches. If the score is tied at three points for each player or team, the next point wins the game.

    6. A one hour time limit is in effect for all matches unless both players agree to remove the time limit prior to the beginning of the match. The time limit will be removed during all semi-final and final matches.

    7. Server shall project ball by hand in to the air in any direction and before it hits the ground strike it with his/her racquet; the delivery shall be completed at the moment of impact of the racquet and the ball.

    8. The server may not serve until the receiver is ready.

    9. At the end of the first game the receiver shall become the server and the server, the receiver. Players will switch sides after each game.

    10. In all cases where a let has to be called under the rules or to provide an interruption to play it should have the following interpretation:

      1. When called solely in respect of a service that one service only should be replayed if the let serve lands within the serving area.

      2. When called under any other circumstances, point should be replayed.

    11. Service is a let:

      1. When the ball served touches the net, strap, or band and is otherwise good, or, after touching the net, strap.

      2. If a service or a fault is delivered when the receiver is not ready.

    12. In the case of a let, that particular service shall not count, and the server shall serve again, if the let serve lands within the serving area.

    13. Players are to respect all opponents calls of in or out. If in doubt whether a ball is in or out, a player should always give the opponent the favorable call.

Missouri Western State University Intramural Rules

  1. Injuries and Insurance: Students, faculty and staff are reminded that their participation in intramural sports and free-time recreation activities is completely voluntary and the intramural/Free-time Recreation staff assumes no liability or responsibility during participation. It is strongly recommended that all participants have a satisfactory health status and appropriate personal accident insurance coverage for any injury which might occur during participation in these activities. Insurance is available for students through the Dean of Student Affairs Office.

In the event of an injury, the injured player is required to sit out one play and then re-enter the game at the referee’s discretion. In the event of a serious injury, the player is required to sit out the rest of the game.

  2. A student must be currently enrolled for at least one hour of credit at Missouri Western State University to be eligible for intramural participation. A faculty or staff member is eligible as long as they are officially recognized by the University as faculty or staff.

  3. Any person who has been red-shirted or a member of a freshman, junior varsity or varsity athletic team in the fall or spring at any college or university is ineligible to participate in that specific intramural activity or related activity. They may not participate in the activities listed above until two years following their last collegiate play attempt.  Only one former varsity athlete is allowed on any one intramural team. If the team has a former athlete on it the team must play in the upper division if there is one.  For further clarification contact the Intramural Office. An individual is considered to be a member of a varsity squad if he practices with the team, his name appears on a roster for a regular season game or if he plays spring ball.

  4. A player may not transfer from one team to another during a particular activity once they have played in the first game. At the start of a new activity, he/she is then able to transfer to a new team.

  5. A player ejected from a game may not play again in that activity and he/she may not be substituted for in the game he was ejected from. If a player is ejected from two contests, he/she may not participate in Intramurals again.

  6. Additional names may be added to the roster as an activity progresses, provided the names are added to the roster 24 hours before the player participates in their first game. Names may not be added to the roster after the last regular season game.
