Supervision/Management of Community Policing
and the Problem Solver

SYNOPSIS:
This presentation focuses on the roles of law enforcement, police officers and community members in the collaborative problem solving process. The presentation focuses specifically on the role of the supervisor in establishing appropriate expectations of officers and encourages officers' efforts in community policing. The presentation also reviews several leadership styles appropriate for supervising employees in different stages of competence and commitment.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Set expectations for officers' behavior at every stage of the SARA model
  • Diagnose the competence and commitment of their officers to conduct problem solving at every stage
  • Select the leadership style that is appropriate for supervising officers at different levels of competence and commitment
  • Recognize three organizational impediments to collaborative problem solving and be able to address them
  • Recognize three difficulties encountered with the SARA model and be able to address them
  • Recognize four supervisory impediments to collaborative problem solving and be able to address them
  • Understand the importance of flexibility in leadership style in addressing impediments to collaborative problem solving
