Introduction to Community Policing and Collaborative Problem Solving

SYNOPSIS:
This presentation introduces the student to the nature and evolution of community policing and problem solving in America. The presentation focuses on the role of the law enforcement agency, the law enforcement officer, and the community in collaborative problem solving.

OBJECTIVES:

• Explain why police leaders are initiating community policing policies and practices
• Relate the history of policing to the evolution of community policing
• Identify the role of criminal justice research in the evolution of community policing
• Define community policing
• Detail the three core components of community policing. Name and discuss Trojanowicz’s Ten Principles of Community Policing
• Define and demonstrate understanding of the SARA problem solving model
• Demonstration of collaborative problem solving
• Discover the dynamics of facilitating group problem solving
