The Role of Diversity/Cultural Awareness
in Community Policing

SYNOPSIS:
Community Policing forces police to change traditional attitudes toward the public and develop trust, and establish partnerships with communities. Police officers learn why it is important to understand diverse cultures, how prejudice and stereotyping build barriers, and how they can improve relations with diverse cultures within the organization and outside.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss how the changing face of America is affecting Policing.
  • Describe how prejudice and stereotyping hamper community policing effectiveness.
  • Describe how the traditional police culture serves as a barrier to building community partnerships.
  • Discuss ways to improve communication skills in increasingly diverse communities.
  • Define synergy and explain how it is vital to the community policing effort.
