Upper division Psychology classes are usually 10-25 students. Students receive considerable individual attention from faculty both in and out of classes, and there are many opportunities for one-on-one research with faculty.
What student organizations are offered?
Psychology majors have the opportunity to join the Psychology Club, and the department also has a chapter of the Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology. Members of the two organizations often volunteer for service projects such as March of Dimes Walk America, Alzheimer’s Walk, Women’s Abuse Shelter and Camp Quality.
What about the Psychology Department faculty?
There are eight faculty members in the Psychology Department, and all hold the highest degree in their fields. The department’s faculty members are well rounded, with excellent credentials and reputations in their specialty areas. Faculty members offer a broad range of backgrounds and areas of expertise. This is important because Psychology is one of the most diverse academic fields. It is a hybrid science that stretches from the boundaries of chemistry and biology at one end to the social sciences and economics at the other. We have the faculty to cover that broad terrain.
Four faculty members have earned Excellence in Teaching awards from Western, three have received Outstanding Teaching Research Poster Presentation awards from the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, and one faculty member received the Psi Chi Honor Society Midwest Region Faculty Advisor of the Year Award.
What are the Psychology facilities like?
The Psychology Department is located in Janet Gorman Murphy Hall, which was completed in 2001. Psychology majors at Western have access to outstanding facilities for conducting research, including psychological testing equipment, an experiment lab, a computer lab, and psychological assessment instruments.
