8P2 Selecting Short- and
Long-term Strategies
Western selects key strategies relevant to strategic planning priorities and institutional needs through feedback provided by co-chairs and members of the seven opportunity areas identified for stratetic improvement. The Steering Committee for strategic planning uses this feedback to determine priorities and guides their implementation based upon institutional impact, available staffing, physical resources, cost, and urgency of need. The Steering Committee functions under the direction of the President's Cabinet.
The University has designated $500,000 in the funding base for focused strategic funding. A Strategic Planning Implementation Funding (SPIF) group (8-10 members) receives Requests for Proposals for special funding and recommends projects for approval to the President. Projects chosen as AQIP Action Projects through extensive discussion with all levels of the University receive priority funding.
Short-term strategies pertain to operating plans, process development, and improvement. Functional areas allocate resources to meet short-term goals and projects linked to the long-term goals. Long-term strategies focus on wide-ranging institutional improvement and strategic initiatives (8C2, 8P1, Figure
