STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe purpose of this study is to measure knowledge concerning concussion symptoms and perceived implications for student learning among middle school and high school teachers in Missouri. This study will 1) Quantify educatorís knowledge concerning the signs and symptoms of concussion. 2) Determine teachersí perceived risk for altered learning among students who have experienced a concussion. 3) Identify teachersí perceptions on appropriate accommodations for the student who is recovering from a concussion.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYThis study will use a cross-sectional design with convenience sampling. Permission for distribution of surveys will be obtained from administrators at four Missouri schools before any data will be collected. Nursing students will explain the study purpose and goals to the principals before the study is initiated. Surveys (see attachment) will be distributed in all teacher mail boxes with a cover sheet explaining the study with a return envelope. Completed surveys will be placed in a sealed envelope by the teacher participant to maintain anonymity. The envelopes may be returned to a large collection box placed in each school office. Consent will be implied with completion of the survey. An education sheet on concussions will be distributed via their school mail to all teachers groups after data is collected. Health Belief Model will serve as the theoretical framework.
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITSThe study is a minimal risk study. Risks include no more than everyday risk associated with completing the survey. A potential benefit for participants is that they will receive information concerning potential concussion effects on student learning. Future educational interventions may be developed based on the results of this survey. In addition, community awareness may be raised concerning appropriate accommodations for students experiencing concussions.
SUBJECT SELECTIONAll teachers (approximately 200) at the data collection sites will receive a survey. They will self-select participation. No financial benefit will occur for the participants.
CONFIDENTIALITYInformation concerning the study will be presented in a cover letter for the survey. Consent will be implied with completion of the survey. Student nurses who will be collecting the surveys are trained in confidentiality issues and how to protect confidentiality. No identifying information will be on the participant survey or envelop. Data will be collected on site in a sealed box to allow for anonymous submission of the survey. The boxes will be kept in a secure area at each data collection site. Once data is collected, the data will be kept in the PIís office in a locked cabinet to protect privacy. All analysis results will be reported in aggregate. School names and locations will be kept confidential.
