STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThis research study is designed to examine how the upper level students of Missouri Western State University would feel about conceal and carry of a firearm being made legal on the Missouri Western State University campus. Recent changes in conceal and carry policies on college campuses have brought this question to the forefront of campus interest.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYThe subjects used for our research will be upper level course students from; Criminal Justice, Education, Psychology, Nursing and Social Work. We will administer a short confidential hardcopy survey in their classes. For anonymity, the surveys will be a random number and the participants are allowed to decline to complete the survey if they wish. We will then use SPSS 17 to analyze the data that we receive.
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITSThere are no foreseeable risks in this survey to the students, because will not be asking them for personal information. The benefits of the study could potentially be that we get a consensus of how the upper level students of Missouri Western State University feel about concealed carry of a firearm on the campus.
SUBJECT SELECTIONThe survey will be offered to students in upper level courses in Criminal Justice, Education, Psychology, Nursing and Social Work. Based on the current census, this would be about 300 students asked to participate. About 1/3 of the surveyed will be from Criminal Justice and the remaining from the departments of Education, Psychology, Nursing and Social Work. We chose to survey only upper level courses in an attempt to monitor the opinions of those who have been on campus for a period of time.
CONFIDENTIALITYThe survey will be kept completely confidential, no names or personal identifying features will be used for the survey. We will use numbers to code for what class the surveys were taken from and will only be accessible by those people working on the research team.
