STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe research project surveys the learning goals and expectations of adult ESL students in an adult education and learning center in northwest Missouri. The data from the survey will be examined for possible correlations between attendance data, program goals, and teacher goals.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYI will administer a survey to non-native speakers of English studying in the Adult Education and Literacy program at Webster Learning Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. I will also administer the same survey to teachers in the program. I will examine attendance data for the students to determine if there is any correlation between the survey data and attendance.
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITSI will ensure the anonymity of students so that teacher-student relationships are not affected by my survey. I have attempted to design my survey in simple English, but there is potential for embarrassment and frustration for low-level English students when they try to read the survey. For this reason, I plan to read the survey aloud to students, if needed.
SUBJECT SELECTIONI expect to have approximately 40 participants in the study. I will attempt to include all non-native speakers of English enrolled in the Adult Education and Literacy Program at Webster Learning Center during the months of September to November 2013.
CONFIDENTIALITYIdentifiable data will be accessible only on my laptop which is password protected. Hardcopies of data will be kept in a locked file cabinet. The surveys will be coded so that students' identities can only be accessed through the master list on my computer. It is necessary for me to maintain a master list of student identities/codes so that I can access demographic and attendance data for later correlation. NOTE ABOUT THE INFORMED CONSENT FORM attached below: I have written the form in simplified English because I am administering this survey to English language learners. I will attempt to have the form accurately translated into the languages of the students that I am asking to participate. However, some of the students are illiterate in their own language.
