ABSTRACTStatement of Purpose The purpose of this research is to assess the knowledge level of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th semester nursing students about basic nutrition topics. In addition, the data collected will be used as an applied learning experience in the Health Care Leadership Graduate Course, Health Care Data and Decision Support I, for secondary analysis. The results will be shared with the undergraduate nursing curriculum committee. Statement of Research Methodology A nutrition quiz developed by ATI nutrition guidelines will be administered to 1st – 4th semester nursing students at the beginning of the semester. The quiz should take no longer than 15 minutes. Collection of relevant demographic data, specifically nutrition class format (lecture/on-line), university, and year will be noted. The nutrition data will be compiled and reported as aggregate data and student s will not be individually identified during data analysis. All information regarding the identity of individual students and student grade-related information will be kept confidential. The data analysis including descriptive and inferential statistics will be a faculty guided exercise in the graduate class. Graduate students will not have access to individual student identity. Data will be number coded by the instructor. Potential research questions will be developed through this process and the results may be used in presentations at professional meetings. Anticipated Risk and Benefits This study does not pose any risk to students other than the minimal risk of taking a quiz. There are no known physical, psychological, social, legal, or other identifiable risks for students participating in taking this nutrition quiz. The results of the nutrition quiz for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd semester nursing students will not be recorded in the current semester or any future nursing course. The results for the 4th semester nursing students will be recorded as a class assignment as designated in the NUR 475 syllabus and given at the beginning of the semester. Subject Selection This quiz will be completed by all nursing students enrolled in the Fall, 2013, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th semester undergraduate nursing program (approximately 190 students). Confidentiality Student individual scores will be treated as confidential. Quizzes will be kept locked in the investigator’s office. Any published data resulting from this study will not identify individual students but instead will report aggregate data.
