STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe purpose is to determine if motivational factors to engage in physical activity vary across different age groups. It is hypothesized that the motivational factors of physically active young adults to exercise are different in comparison to motivational factors of older adults. It is also hypothesized that younger adults will be more extrinsically motivated and older adults will be more intrinsically motivated
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYParticipants for this study will be a sample of 40 participants, 10 young adult males & 10 young adult females (ages 18-24) and 10 older adult males & 10 older adult females (ages 25-44). Young adult participants will be obtained from Baker Fitness Center at MWSU and older adult participants will be obtained from Anytime Fitness in St.Joseph, MO. A set of questions will be asked for this survey to examine the motivations for exercise The Reasons for Exercise Inventory (REI; Silberstein, 1988). A 24-item, 7 sub-scale Likert-scored scale that evaluates motives for exercising will be administered by the researchers. The participants rate the importance of each motive. Surveys will be directly administered to participants within the designated fitness centers. The surveys will take < 15 minutes to complete.
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITS• As with any questionnaire, the Physical Activity Motivation Questionnaire and The Reasons for Exercise Inventory Questionnaire runs the risk of asking questions that may involve personal issues or problems. This study does not involve any risks (or discomforts) that are greater than those you experience in your daily life. The benefit of the study is to gain knowledge to physical activity across age groups
SUBJECT SELECTIONA stratified sample of 40 physically individuals of varying age groups will be srurveyed for this project. With equal numbers coming from males and females of each aforementioned age group.
CONFIDENTIALITYAll data recorded from this study will remain confidential. Both investigators collecting data will do so in a professional manner and will allow the participants to remain anonymous. The two investigators will be the only ones who have access to your surveys. Consent forms will be kept separate form surveys to protect anonymity.
