STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe purpose of the study it to assess the effectiveness of care management staffing within the hospital setting by looking at the number of social workers in relationship to the number of RN care managers. In a care management department it is important that there is adequate staff to meet the needs of the patient. It is important to research the job descriptions of both the social worker and the RN care manager to be sure that they are adequately staffed.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYThe methodology of the research will consist of interviewing human resource representatives in hospitals. Some research will be able to be collected through information on the individual hospitals’ websites which will be done prior to contacting the HR department if at all possible. Questions would include the job description of the social worker and the RN care managers. Questions would also be in regards to staffing including the number of social worker and RN care managers as well as the ratio of each title to the number of patients per unit. The results will be used to find a “Golden Rule” of staffing a care management department with an adequate number of social workers and RN care managers to meet the needs of the patients.
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITSThe data collected during this research will help to improve care management departments within hospitals. The research will help to find the best ratio of social workers versus RN care managers to be the most effective for patients of the hospital. I do not anticipate any risks for myself or my resources throughout my research.
SUBJECT SELECTIONData will be collected from hospitals in the mid-west that are similar in size to Heartland Regional Medical Center to determine see how similar size hospitals are staffing social workers and RN care managers.
CONFIDENTIALITYThe data that will be acquired from the hospital sources will be public information. For confidentiality of the individual that no names will be used. The hospital itself will be referred to by the number of beds the facility has instead of the actual name.
Final Report on 05-04-2013I was able to finish the research. Everything went as planned.
