ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE This study is to see what of the 9 “Barriers of Thinking” has the largest effect on clients drug use. The study will be conducted by use of voluntary survey. Findings from this study will be used to better substance abuse treatment program. STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This study will be conducted at the WRDCC treatment program. All offenders in Housing Unit One DOC programs will be given the survey. The informed consent and the survey will be given during group meetings with their wing. The data from survey will then be compiled and ranked into the top three. The survey will be used to see what of the nine “Barriers in Thinking” they feel they used during past drug usage. The nine “Barriers in Thinking” are closed thinking, victim role, superior self-image, reckless attitude, instant gratification, fear of losing face, power control, possessive attitude and uniqueness. ANTICIPATIED RISKS AND BENEFITS There is very low anticipated risk to the clients because the questions address topics the clients currently use in their treatment. The benefits to the clients would be that they will have another chance to look at their drug use tendencies. This survey could benefit treatment programs by providing a better understanding of client’s drug use tendencies. SUBJECT SELECTION All 300 plus offenders will be offered the chance to take the survey, so there is no sampling. They will not be compensated for this survey. CONFIDENTIALITY All signed consent forms will be kept in a locked office. At the end of the study all consent forms will be destroyed. After the surveys are collected all information will be entered into a spread sheet and then the surveys will be destroyed. No personally information will be given on the surveys themselves.

Final Report on 04-30-2013

I have collected my data. I had a small sample size than expected. I offered the survey to 55 offenders and 40 chose to take it. The originals have all been destroyed.
