ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study is to examine elementary teacher candidate attitudes about the teaching of social studies content by integrating it with the new Common Core Standards in Literacy. In the fall of 2012, undergraduate students enrolled in EDU 310/320/340 at the Kansas City Northland Campus will complete a brief survey at the beginning of the semester to determine their beliefs about integrating social studies with literacy. Throughout the semester, they will be taught a variety of teaching strategies to integrate social studies with literacy and will complete several joint projects. They will then take the same survey at the end of the semester to determine if and how their attitudes have changed. Student will be asked to sign an informed consent form to participate. If they choose to participate, their information will be kept strictly confidential. It may however, be used in conferences and possible publication. In this case, it will be reported only as anonymous, aggregated data. This data may also have some implications for elementary teacher education programs with regard to social studies methods and reading methods courses.Extension Request on 04-11-2013We are in the process of analyzing our data and will be presenting at the IRA Conference in San Antonio on April 22. We are also planning on repeating the pilot during the fall 2013 semester. At this time we request an extension for submitting this data. Also, do we need to resubmit for permission to repeat the study during the fall of 2013? Debby |
