STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of this exploratory study is to produce insight into the interrelationship between a student's personal abilities, interpersonal relationships, and health and well-being. Anticipated findings are that there will be correlations between those students who have stronger relationships, levels of well-being, and psychological capital states (resiliency, optimism, hope, efficacy) and their school-related performance (GPA's).

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Freshmen students enrolled in GBA 110 in the CSB will complete a survey which will take 15-20 minutes. The questionnaire will provide the opportunity for students to respond through various responses. The student subjects will be asked to provide demographic information in the survey. They may choose not to respond to any question at their discretion. Methods to analyze these survey results with student performance (GPA's) will be conducted. No individuals will be analyzed on a personal level, but rather the data will be aggregated for the entire group of subjects.

ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITS

This is a minimal risk study in which student subjects participation will involve filling out a written survey that will take 15-20 minutes.

SUBJECT SELECTION

The approximate number of student subjects to be used in this study will be in the 100-150 range.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Any information obtained during this study which could identify subjects will be kept strictly confidential. The data will be stored on a secure server and stored by a unique code (not by name). Any hard data will be stored in a secure cabinet. The principal investigator will keep the data for five years and then securely delete it and will keep the raw data in a locked cabinet for five years after the study is complete and then will destroy it. The information obtained in this study may be published in scientific journals or presented at scientific meetings but the data will only be reported as aggregated, anonymous data.
