WESTERN PRESENTS ANNUAL FALL JAZZ CONCERT
St. Joseph, Mo. -Nov. 10, 2010-The Missouri Western State University jazz program will present ''Nostalgia in Kansas City,'' the annual fall jazz concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in Potter Hall Theater. The concert will feature performances by the Lab Band, Vocal Jazz and Jazz Ensemble.
Vocal Jazz, under the direction of Kathleen Holeman, will showcase several standards as well as newer works of today. Highlighted soloists will be Rebecca Colley on Joe Zawinul's ''Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,'' Kari Tolbert and Brett Ryan on ''A Tribute to Duke'' and Justin Briner and Samy Northcutt on Paul McCartney's ''Blackbird.''
The Lab Band, under the direction of Steve Molloy, and the Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Bob Long, will both be performing selections from the Kansas City Suite, penned by the great Benny Carter. The suite, written to depict Kansas City at the time William ''Count'' Basie became a bandleader, was recorded by the Basie band in 1960. The MWSU jazz program would like to dedicate this concert to the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Carters landmark composition.
