Music Education

The music faculty at Missouri Western are dedicated to training well-prepared and effective music teachers. The Bachelor of Science in Education Degree with a major in music is available in both instrumental and vocal music with K-12 certification. In addition, students may elect to emphasize performance or elementary music.

The course offerings in music education are designed to be specifically relevant to the current demands in public school music. In addition to the core of classes in musicianship, students receive intensive training in conducting and pedagogical methods and materials. Methods and pedagogy classes are taught by faculty members who have had successful careers as public school music educators. Members of this faculty frequently serve as consultants to area school districts and as adjudicators and clinicians for professional organizations.

The Missouri Western professional education sequence has received national recognition. In this sequence, the student works in cooperation with experienced public school teachers for a total of three semesters while receiving supervision from education and music faculty. The placement of our graduates in the job market is excellent.
