There are several jazz ensembles in the curriculum at MWSU. Two
full jazz ensembles (big band instrumentation) rehearse each semester.
There are also courses in jazz improvisation, jazz composition
and arranging, and jazz history. We also offer experiences in
jazz combos.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of the Jazz program
at MWSU. Under the direction of Richard Yeager, the top band has
been invited to perform at major jazz festivals around the nation.
Some of the more recent festivals attended by the top band have
been the Mobile (Alabama) Jazz Festival, the Elmhurst Jazz Festival
in the greater Chicago area, the Wichita (Kansas) Jazz Festival,
and Missouri Music Educators Convention.
The Jazz program and the top jazz ensemble are led by Richard
Yeager. The Jazz Lab band is directed by Jeff Hinton. Improvisation
is taught by several of the area's best jazz performers.
Scholarships are available in conjunction with Band scholarships
for membership in these ensembles. Pianists and bassists may
receive scholarships for jazz participation only. Contact
us for more information and to set up an audition date
and time.
