Deborah Freedman, Music Director and Conductor of St. Joseph Symphony,
came to St. Joseph in 1988 with a considerable amount of conducting and performing
experience. She has served as Music Director of the Maryland Women's Symphony,
Luther College Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix Choir and Chrysalis Singers, and the
Cyllenian Chamber Ensemble, and has held conducting positions with Annapolis
Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Conservatory, West Green Bay High School Orchestra,
Central Washington Symphony Orchestra, and University of Minnesota School of
Music. She obtained her Bachelor of Music from the University of Minnesota, and
her Master's and Ph.D. from the Peabody Conservatory.
In addition to being a performer on the French horn, she has been an Assistant
Professor of Music at Portland State High School in Baltimore, in the Green
Bay Public Schools, and at the Bridgeport Public Schools in Washington.
Since coming to St. Joseph, Dr. Freedman has directed the Lawrence Chamber
Players, UMKC Orchestra, festival orchestras, the LaCrosse Symphony, and the
Women Composers' Orchestra's 10th anniversary performance in Baltimore. She
also conducted the Symphony on the Prairie, 1997 Nebraska Honor Orchestra and
the 1997 International Women's Brass Conference Brass Ensemble.
Dr. Freedman also serves as Associate Professor of Music at Missouri Western
State University. Along with these responsibilities, she directs the MWSU Orchestra.
