Web Access
You will need to be able to reach the World Wide Web, either through a network at your place of business, a public library, or through a modem connection from home. The modem should be at least 28.8 kbps. If you can, use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that has a local access number so that you can avoid long distance charges. You can also inquire about cable modem or DSL service from your respective cable and phone companies.

Software Requirements
The operating system and browser that you use are important. WebCT supports the following operating systems and web browsers:

Windows Users/IBM Compatible
Microsoft Windows 98, 2nd edition /2000/XP operating systems software:

  • AOL® 7.0 and 8.0 browsers

NetscapeInternet Explorer

In order to use all of WebCT's tools, WebCT requires a browser that has Java, Javascript, cascading style sheets (css), and cookies enabled. These options need to be set in your browser.  See the Student FAQs page for instructions.

Ad Pop-up Blockers
You must disable any pop-up blockers that you may have installed on your system before using WebCT.  These software applications will prevent WebCT from operating correctly.  Contact your ISP or computer manufacturer for instructions on disabling these software applications if you think you might have them installed.

Anti-Virus Software
Quality virus protection software is required. This software is especially critical if you are accessing coursework from a computer on a network that is not protected by regularly updated virus-protection software. Virus protection software provides computer systems protection against potentially damaging computer viruses. New viruses appear on a frequent basis; keep your virus protection software current by installing upgrades as they become available.

Your Internet service provider can give you a recommendation on the software that may work best for you, or do a web search on computer virus software for a list of virus protection products.

PDF Viewer - Adobe Acrobat Reader
Some instructors will ask you to read information contained in a PDF document. You will then need software that is capable of viewing PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat Reader is one of the most widely used PDF document readers. You may download Adobe Acrobat Reader by clicking here.

Word Processor
You will also need word processing software for composing documents. While we highly recommend using Microsoft Word, you may also use another software package, such as WordPerfect or Microsoft Works. The important thing to remember when using something other than Microsoft Word is to save your files as rich text format (RTF). Saving files as RTF will ensure that your instructor can open them regardless of the word processor you used to create them.
