Core Courses

AIM 500 Media Analysis (2) F.

An overview of all components found in digital media including terminology for all areas and analysis of media creations.

AIM 515 Media Tools and Techniques 1 (2) F.

An overview of all industry standard hardware and software used in integrated media including terminology, functions, and creative potentials.

AIM 520 Professional Writing for Media (3) F.

Introduction to the varied demands of professional writing, including creative expression for convergent contexts, analytical and informational presentations, and explanatory and persuasive approaches for grant writing.

AIM 525 Project Management 1 (3) Sp.

In-depth study of media project organization from original conception to finished project. Includes responsibilities, timeline, accounting, marketing, etc.

AIM 615 Media Tools and Techniques 2 (2) Sp.

Continuation of AIM515. In-depth study of industry standard programs and hardware. Includes original projects in each media area.

AIM 540 Interactive Web Design (3) Sp.

Skills and principles that enable the media professional to construct varied interactive pages with effective design that delivers a specific message to a target audience serving a particular purpose. Includes analysis of “best practices.”

AIM 610 Media Expression (3) F.

In depth analysis of digital media creations: conceptualizing visualization, sound design, sequencing, and narrative form. Includes research on career opportunities.

AIM 640 Advanced Digital Production 1 (3) F.

Advanced projects to develop in-depth knowledge with Media Tools and Techniques in all digital media. Options for certification in software media programs are available.

 

AIM 690 Thesis Project (6) F, Sp.

A major cumulative and integrated media project and the creation of a Portfolio of all degree activity.

AIM 510 Research and Development (2) F.

In-depth study of digital media developers, educational resources, media analysis and criticism. Includes the structuring of a continuous research agenda.

AIM 535 Collaboratory 1 (3) Sp.

Creation of original media projects with an integrated team approach. Project management is emphasized.

AIM 635 Collaboratory 2 (3) F.

Continuation of AIM535. Includes preparation for AIM590 Thesis Project.

AIM 650 Advanced Digital Production 2 (3) Sp.

Continuation of AIM570. Options for certification in software media programs are available.

 

Convergent Media Option Courses

 

AIM 505 Convergent Media Theory and Practice (3) F.

A consideration of the mixing and convergence of contemporary media: print, film, video, photography, music, electronic, and digital. The course delineates media forms, including their emergence and uses, and examines theories of culture, media, and information that include theories of audience participation, non-hierarchical flattening, rhetorical positioning, long tails and niches, pervasive economical marketing, dispersals of authority, and others.

AIM 530 Convergent Media Law and Ethics (3) Sp.

Relevant legal issues and ethical concerns arising from convergent media. Issues examined include copyright law and its relevance in an electronic age, privacy issues, fair use in the context of mixed- or multi-media, legal and ethical responsibilities of Internet site providers, ethical and rhetorical positioning of bloggers, and implications of the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

AIM 620 Advanced Writing for Convergent Media (3) F.

Advanced practice and performance in writing effective copy for convergent contexts. Students will apply skills and understandings from other convergent courses to tailor text to deliver specific messages for particular target audiences.

AIM 670 Seminar in Convergent Media (2) Sp.

Discussion, critical thinking, and collaboration in resolving issues and problems of contemporary interest in convergent media. Topics will vary. Each seminar will begin with group-intensive study of seminar issues and will be followed by independent student research, preparation of an extended paper, and presentation of research using techniques of convergent media.
