What internship opportunities are available?
Every Government student completes an internship to gain real-world experience and learn what type of career in Government is right for them. Students have completed internships in a variety of locations including the Missouri General Assembly, U.S. Senator’s office, Legal Aid of Western Missouri, Missouri State Government, City of Kansas City, and Buchanan County.
In their last semester before graduation, seniors in the Social Work program complete a 456-hour internship by spending approximately eight hours a day four days a week at an assigned social service agency under the supervision of a qualified professional social worker.
Do students and faculty work together on research projects?
Students may work individually or in small groups with professors to complete research projects on a variety of topics. Summer research programs and independent research courses provide opportunities for research. For example, a student and faculty member in Sociology completed a research project on “Public Funding, Education, and Student Success Rates in Missouri.” With a commitment to undergraduate research, students are well prepared for graduate programs.
Along with the required 456-hour internship at a social services agency for Social Work majors, seniors must complete a research project that will benefit the agency where they are completing their internship. They work one-on-one with faculty members on those research projects and others that are part of their coursework.
Do students present research findings at national conferences?
Yes, two Government students presented research findings at regional International Studies Association conferences in St. Louis and Las Vegas. Last year, Social Work students presented research at the International Business & Economic Research conference in Las Vegas, and at the National Association of Social Workers, Missouri Chapter, annual conference in the Lake of the Ozarks.
