Alberta Cross Haynes Teaching Scholarship

Western Department Aid Program

Alberta Cross Haynes Teaching Scholarship was established by friends and family of Mrs. Alberta Cross Haynes who served as an elementary teacher in rural Missouri in the 1920s. Applicants must be Junior or Senior level declared Elementary Education majors who are eligible for membership in Kappa Delta Pi. Preference will be given to students from a rural background (hometown population of less than 2500). GPA of at least 3.2. Two references are required and financial need will be a consideration.

Bob Berger Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: March 1st

Established in memory of Bob Berger, Director of Financial Aid from 1970 to 2001 by friends and family. Recipients of this scholarship should be a junior or senior majoring in Education, Nursing, or Wildlife Biology with a minimum GPA of 2.8. Financial need will be a consideration. Applicants should submit two professional (instructor and/or employer) references using the on-line reference letter request form.

Bob and Fern Dawson Memorial Scholarship

The Bob and Fern Dawson Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time junior or senior student majoring in Education. Art Education majors are also eligible. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and financial need will be a consideration. Preference will be given to first generation college students. Two letters of reference are required.

Culver-Gettys Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: March 1st                      

Western Department Aid Program

This scholarship is given in memory of Lt. Col. Charles M. Culver and Capt. Hugh M. Gettys.  The scholarship is available to degree-seeking students who have completed a minimum of 28 college hours.  The students should have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better and show evidence of financial need.  If the students continue to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.5, the scholarship may be continued for the second semester.  Preferably, the students should be planning a career in education.

Eleanor Cottrell Memorial Scholarship

The Department of Education is offering a scholarship from the Eleanor Cottrell Memorial Scholarship Fund to a returning student with a declared major in elementary education to help further his / her professional education.

Enid and Allen Lowenberg Education Scholarship

Eula W. Popplewell Scholarship

Western Department Aid Program

The Department of Education is offering a scholarship in memory of Eula Popplewell.  The Eula Popplewell Scholarship is awarded to a freshman with a declared pre-major in Elementary Education.  The recipient must provide 2 references, high school rank, ACT or equivalent score, and a record of service to education or to the community.  Recipients may re-apply if a GPA of 3.2 is maintained, they have a declared major in Elementary Education, and if no other eligible freshmen apply.  Freshmen will be given first priority.

George M. Ashworth Memorial Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship shall be a junior or senior, majoring in elementary or middle school education, and from Northwest Missouri.  They must have a GPA of 3.0 or better and demonstrated need.

Helen C. Gettys Education Scholarship

This endowed scholarship is given in memory of Helen C. Gettys, former professor emeritus in the Department of Education.  The scholarship is available to a degree-seeking student who has been formally admitted to the Education Department.  The student should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and financial need will be a consideration.  Two letters of reference are required.

Janet Gorman Murphy/Catherine Hennessey Gorman Teaching Scholarship       Deadline: March 1st

Applicants for this scholarship must be at least a junior with a declared major in Education, have a 2.8 GPA or above, and have an ACT score of 25 or above.

John S. and Helen Freda Creal Education Scholarship

This endowed scholarship is awarded to full-time nontraditional students seeking a degree in Education. GPA of 3.0 to qualify and 3.0 in major to maintain. Name & contact information of two references must be submitted to the Education Department.

Kappa Delta/Coyne Scholarship

The Kappa Delta Pi Scholarship is awarded by the education faculty to one student in elementary education and one student in secondary education. As evidence of superior academic achievement and leadership skills, the student must be a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the national education honor society for undergraduates in education.

Leona Ebersold Education Scholarship

Established in memory of Leona Ebersold.  The applicants should be at least a junior majoring in education, elementary preferred, with a 2.5 GPA and one recommendation from education department is required.

Marie Heerlein Memorial Education Scholarship

The Department of Education is offering a scholarship in memory of the former Secretary in the Department of Education, Marie Heerlein.  The Marie Heerlein Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a junior or senior with a declared major in Elementary Education with an emphasis area of Social Studies.  Eligible applicants must be able to show financial need, and provide a record of services rendered to the community and/or education.

McHugh Lafayette-Humbolt Scholarship

Deadline: March 1st

The recipient of this endowed scholarship shall be an Elementary or Music Education major and maintain a 2.5 GPA during their freshman year and a 3.0 GPA all succeeding years.  The student must be a graduate of Lafayette High School with one reference from his or her high school principal.  Preference will be given to a student who attended Humboldt Elementary School.  The MWSU Faculty Scholarship Committee will award the scholarship.

Missouri Retired Teacher Foundation Scholarship

Seven $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students officially enrolled in a Teacher Education Program.

Missouri Teacher Education Scholarship

Deadline: February 15

State Program

This program is a one-time, nonrenewable award of $2,000 to encourage top-ranking Missouri high school seniors, or college freshmen or sophomores to start a career in teaching.  Applicants must rank or have ranked in the top 15 percent of their high school class or have scored in the top 15 percent on the SAT, ACT or SCAT exams.  The scholarship program is administered by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Nelle Blum Scholarship-Education

Established in memory of Nelle Blum, former dean of the St. Joseph Jr. College.  This scholarship is awarded to degree-seeking students in Business or Education who have completed 60 credit hours, have a GPA of 3.0 and have demonstrated financial need.

Paul F. and Elisabeth Kees Trust Fund

This scholarship is given in memory of Paul F. and Elisabeth Kees and is awarded by the Scholarship Committee upon recommendation of the Department of Education.  Applicants should be full-time students in good standing and have a defined hearing loss.  If no student with a defined hearing loss applies then students with other exceptionalities, or who have demonstrated an interest in Special Education may be considered.

Southside Sertoma of St. Joseph Scholarship

Southside Sertoma presents a $500 scholarship each year to a deserving student selected by the Scholarship Committee.  In keeping with Sertoma's work in areas of speech and hearing correction, the scholarship will be available to a student working in special education.

Western Excellence Awards

Western Department Aid Program

These scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to students who qualify according to departmental guidelines.  Eligibility requirements and applications should be obtained and submitted to the department or office specified.  The awards are worth an amount up to $1,500.  At least one award in each department will be awarded to an incoming freshman student.  Departments participating with Western Excellence Awards include: Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Communication Studies & Theatre, Computer Science, Mathematics, & Physics, Criminal Justice & Legal Studies, Economics, Education, Engineering Technology, English, Foreign Languages, & Journalism, Government, Social Work & Sociology, Health, Physical Education & Recreation, History, Philosophy & Geography, Music, Nursing & Psychology.
