English, Foreign Languages, and Journalism Department CAI Computer Lab Assistants Western Department Aid Program Scholarships are available to students working as Lab Attendants in the CAI Computer Lab. Major duties include opening and closing the lab, monitoring lab use for security, and reporting problems to the faculty lab coordinator. Students work under the supervision of individual faculty members and a faculty coordinator to complete research and other duties as assigned. Students will be selected based upon their fluency in the required languages and ability to work with other students. Major duties will include working individually and in small groups with students having difficulty with French, German, or Spanish pronunciation and grammar; assisting students working independently in the language laboratory; preparing and maintaining tapes and other laboratory materials; and stimulating student interest in French, German, and Spanish. Recipients must have completed at least 24 hours of coursework at Western, earned a GPA of 2.5 or above, and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, both cumulative and in English. Must be involved in Departmental, Institutional and Community activities. The applicant must be working as a mentor or tutor in a Chapter I school or actively working the same amount of time in an established literacy program. This scholarship will help with expenses to send a Sigma Tau Delta member to a conference at which he / she gives a paper. The applicant must have a 3.0 GPA, both cumulative and in English. Applicants must be an English major or minor with a minimum 3.0 cummulative GPA. Applicants who have participated in departmental activities are preferred. George Scholarship Deadline: March 1st Western Department Aid Program This endowed scholarship was established in memory of Jennifer A. George, a 1992 graduate of Missouri Western, by her family and friends. The scholarship will be awarded in the spring semester to a junior or senior English major with emphasis in technical communication or journalism. Financial need will be a consideration. The scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior student majoring in English with a cumulative GPA of 2.5. Financial need will be a consideration in the selection process. Preference given to French majors but available to students enrolled in French courses who have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students must provide a personal statement. This scholarship is for a departmental major or minor who has participated in departmental activities and completed 30 or more hours with a GPA above 3.0. Financial need will be a consideration. Applicants must score 22 or higher on the EACT and have participated in newspaper, yearbook, foreign languages, creative writing classes, and/or literary/literacy-related activities while in high school.
