America Reads! is a federal work-study program which is part of a nationwide effort to improve the reading skills of elementary students.

Key Components of America Reads!

  • You must qualify for the Federal Work-study program at Western.
  • You must have the desire to work with children.
  • You must have your own transportation.
  • You must complete an application form.
  • You must attend the required paid training sessions.
  • You will be tutoring elementary school students to help improve their reading skills.

Benefits of Becoming an America Reads! Tutor

  • Giving the gift of reading.
  • Serving the community by helping a child(ren) in need.
  • List participation in one of Former President Clinton's programs on your resume.
  • Earn one paid credit hour for participating in the training course.
  • Earn $6.00 per hour while serving as a reading tutor.
  • Qualify for the Hayes-Bagnall Literacy Scholarship for excellence in literacy service.
