What majors and minors are offered?

The Education Department offers a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Elementary Education (Grades 1 - 6) with a choice of an area of concentration, depending upon the grade level you plan to teach. Those levels include the following additional areas of certification:

  • Early Childhood Education, (birth – three years)
  • Early Childhood Special Education
  • Special Education Mild-Moderate Cross-Categorical (K-12)
  • Special Reading (K-12)
  • Teacher Certification in ESOL

In addition, other non-certified areas of concentration such as mathematics and foreign language are available. Please consult an education advisor or refer to forms in the lobby of the education department suite.

Students who plan to teach high school major in their particular field of study, such as history or English, and take courses in the Education Department to obtain a teaching certification.  

The Education Department also offers a minor in Childhood Studies for students who have child-related emphases in their majors, such as juvenile delinquency or child psychology.

As a high school student how do I prepare for an Education major?

Besides completing the core requirement of high school courses, you should begin as early as possible to gain experience working with preschool through twelfth-grade students. This could include assisting a classroom teacher, working as a camp counselor, teaching a Sunday School class, assisting with summer programs for students, and gaining leadership skills through organizations such as the Girl or Boy Scouts programs.

What are the admission requirements for an Education major?

Students must apply for admission into the teacher education program and meet the following criteria:

  • ACT composite score of 22 or higher, or an SAT combined score of 1030 or higher (920 if taken before April 1995)
  • C-BASE passing score on each subtest (these are taken as a college student)
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 and satisfactory completion of three prerequisite courses.

What is the typical class size?

Class sizes vary from 10 to 35 in majors classes.

What student organizations are offered?

The Education Department sponsors the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society. Admission requirements include a 3.2 GPA and formal sponsorship of the faculty.

What about the Education Department faculty?

Western’s Education Department faculty members serve as excellent role models for their students, as all have prior experience in preschool – twelfth-grade classrooms. Seven out of 10 of the faculty members have earned the highest degree in their field.

What are the Education facilities like?

The Education Department is located in Janet Gorman Murphy Hall, which was completed in 2001. Most of the majors classes are held in this building. Several of the classrooms are equipped with fixed video cameras so students can practice teaching and view their actions on tape.

Is the program accredited?

Western’s teacher education program is approved at the state level by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and nationally by the National Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (NCATE).
