Before the performance of the local economy can be assessed, a useable, easily understood portrait of the local economic landscape is required. The internet has made the data that describe innumerable facets of the economy available at the click of a mouse, but the sheer volume of information can easily overwhelm efforts to find the meaning in the numbers. This web site is intended to begin addressing this problem, by sorting through some of the statistics that are available to understand the local economy and presenting them in a clear and easy to understand manner.

Our goal is to analyze the information available from the past and explore emerging information that points the way to the future. It is hoped that the user of this web site will come away with a greater understanding of the local economy and, also, with new questions and a keen interest in investigating these subjects further.

The performance of the local economy is of interest to many different groups:

citizens, whose livelihood, health, well-being, and possibilities for the future depend upon it;

businesses in the community, who must decide, among other things, whether to continue to operate in the community, expand their operations, or relocate;

businesses outside of the community, who may be interested in relocating and will consider carefully both the promise and the problems associated with a particular location;

governmental units, who are charged with making decisions that serve both the short and the long term interests of the community;

and many others.
