FRENCH 112
Beginning French II
Murphy 108
French 112 is a continuation
of French 102. It will lead students to expand their knowledge of other
cultures and to put theirs in perspective. FRE112 fulfills the Category IV of
General Studies requirement.
Required texts:
Entre amis 5th edition (Oates, Oukada;
Houghton Mifflin)
(On-line
exercises and resources: http://college.hmco.com/languages/french/oates/entre_amis/5e/students/)
Quia (On-line Workbook /Lab Manual,
packaged with textbook--
http://books.quia.com).
Studying a foreign language
broadens one's perspective of the world and enhances one's understanding of
self. It enables you to participate in a multi-cultural community, prepares you
for a career, a graduate school and for using the language in the future. It
helps dispel stereotypes, and enhances respect for others. Participation in
study abroad is encouraged to gain fluency and cultural understanding.
Course standards:
1. Students comprehend
French when listening to a variety of
sources.
2. Students communicate
by speaking French for a variety of
purposes and audiences.
3. Students comprehend French when reading a variety of
materials.
4. Students communicate
by writing French for a
variety of purposes and audiences.
5. Students demonstrate
knowledge and understanding of French
culture.
Course objectives:
1. Understand French when spoken at a basic level, as presented relative to everyday cultural topics and in-class explanations, in the various verb tenses we have studied.
2. Speak and be understood in order to obtain and/or provide information in conversations dealing with social functions and survival situations by asking and answering questions in present indicative, using learned expressions, and recombining language used by my class partner.
3. Read instructions for doing the exercises in the text, realia (advertisements, timetables, weather reports) appropriate to this level, short passages written for students concerning culture and civilization, short literary texts appropriate for this level.
4. Write fairly coherent passages describing my daily life and personal preferences, using the past and future tenses with moderate success and using the present tense correctly most of the time.
5. Offer insightful commentary on aspects of culture, i.e. everyday life, geography, and history; sustain or refute widely held viewpoints about French culture; locate and interpret culture-related data from current sources (Internet, readings, realia); interact in a culturally appropriate manner.
Course structure: This class is participatory. You will
have small group and individual activities, listening, speaking, multimedia,
and reading activities, as well as role plays, research projects, and
demonstrations. Your daily homework assignments will include reading, writing,
and listening exercises. At the end of each chapter, a test (which may
include any or all of the Course Standards) will be given. It may be a project
or presentation rather than a traditional test. No make-up exams will be given, for any reason. However, the
lowest test grade of the semester will be dropped. Any student with a grade of
90% or better at the end of the semester is not required to take the final
exam. Because listening and speaking are the primary modes of
communication in class, class will be conducted in French. You should attempt to use French as much as possible, both in
pair or group work and when asking questions. It will pay off!
Quia: It is possible to receive 100% on all Quia assignments by completing them by the due date. This
insures an A+ for 20% of your final grade. The on-line workbook has written,
aural, and video activities that will be assigned for each chapter. Follow the
instructions for enrolling in the class carefully. Use the email address that
you check frequently, as I may send you messages if needed. For each chapter,
each exercise has a due date. If the exercise is not completed by

In order to improve student
learning and retention as well as to achieve compliance with federal financial
aid policies, Western has implemented a mandatory attendance policy for
students in all 100- and 200-level courses. Instructors are required to monitor
and track student attendance. A student will be given an excused absence when
acting as an official representative of the university, provided the student
gives prior written verification from the faculty/staff supervisor of the
event. Any additional excused absences are at the complete discretion of
the instructor.
Maximum allowed,
unexcused absences accrued before the reporting of midterm grades are: 5. Thus,
when you have 6 unexcused absences, you will be reported to the Registrar’s
Office, who will automatically withdraw you from this class. The
Financial Aid Office will reduce financial aid as appropriate.
For FRE 112, students are
allowed 3 "free" absences. After three absences, a student's
final grade will be lowered 1% for each subsequent absence (whether
excused or not). Any student with more than 3 absences must take the final
exam and should not expect to receive a final grade higher than a B. In ALL cases,
students are responsible for all materials covered during their absence.
Late work will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor for 50%
credit only. Late arrivals are disruptive to the class and will be
counted as absences.
You will have open access to
the Foreign Language lab, open weekdays only. As in any other lab, you
need to sign in when you enter. All the materials necessary for the
completion of your workbook/lab activities are on line with Quia.
Please come to see me during
my office hours or make an appointment with me. Do not hesitate to forward any question you might have through email
as well. You can also schedule free tutoring through the Center for
Academic Support: www.missouriwestern.edu/CAS/
Any
student in this course who has a disability that prevents the
fullest expression of abilities
should
contact me personally as soon as possible so we can discuss class
requirements.
Academic honesty is required
in all academic endeavors. Violations of academic honesty include any
instance of plagiarism, cheating, seeking credit for another’s work, falsifying
documents or academic records, or any other fraudulent activity.
Violations of academic honesty may result in a failing grade on the assignment,
failure in the course, or expulsion from the University. When a student’s
grade has been affected, violations of academic honesty will be reported to the
Provost or designated representative on the Academic Honesty Violation Report
forms.
Please see the 2006-07
Student Handbook and Calendar on page 21 for specific activities identified as
violations of this policy and the student due process procedure. This handbook
is also available online at http://www.missouriwestern.edu/handbook/index.pdf
Cheating or plagiarism is not
acceptable. You will receive a 0 (zero)
for any work that shows evidence of cheating and/or
plagiarism.

This portion of the grade
includes your active participation in class and in campus events. You begin with 100 points. For each late
arrival/absence, 5 points are deducted. Each cultural event is worth 10 points.
In order to receive full credit for participation, you must attend a minimum
of three international/cultural events on campus during the semester.
Examples of events: Pause Café, Foreign Film Series on campus, and lectures on
French or multicultural themes. You will need to provide written documentation
of your attendance.
